Corrections Medical Center to receive more funding
State Representative Michael Stinziano announced the Corrections Medical Center (CMC) in Columbus will receive approximately $110,000 in fiscal year 2012. The money will improve medical treatment for inmates and help the state alleviate the costs associated with patient care. When patients are confined to their beds for long periods of time, their skin breaks down and bed sores appear. The Ohio Department of Rehabilitation and Correction (DRC) intends to rent new equipment from Convatec, Inc. that will help heal severe bed sores and open wounds. Additionally, the average unit rental cost per day is lower than other manufacturers. The faster healing time and lower rental cost result in savings for the DRC. The CMC is a high security level institution, opened in 1993, and provides comprehensive inpatient medical services for approximately 127 male and female inmates. They additionally service outpatient specialty care to hundreds of inmates each week from various institutions.
