With summer officially here, London Public Library is making final preparations for its annual summertime concert series. This years series, sponsored by Merchants National Bank in London, starts with the Toll House Jazz Band at 11:30 a.m. July 2.
Toll Houses repertoire of traditional-style Dixieland jazz includes songs from Jellyroll Morton, Bix Biederbecke, King Oliver and other musicians from the 1920s. Led by banjo player Mike Evans, the Columbus-based band plays all over the Buckeye state and has played three European tours.
"Theres nothing quite as refreshing as Dixieland music, so were very pleased to start the series with Toll House," says Bryan Howard, adult services librarian and concert organizer.
Attendees at the first concert will receive a free boxed lunch, compliments of the Madison Senior Living Community, a lunch-time sponsor of the series for the last several years.
The series will continue throughout July with performances from Lone Raven, an Irish & Celtic band, on July 9, Arnett Howard, Columbus premiere New Orleans and Motown artist on July 23, and Deighton Charlemagne, a reggae and Caribbean artist on July 30. All performances start at 11:30 a.m. on the librarys back lawn.
Concert goers can get more information on each performance by picking up a flyer at the library or going online to www.mylondonlibrary.org and downloading a schedule from the homepage.
"The concerts are a staple of our summertime activity, so were always pleased when we are able to provide them," says Gary Branson, library director.
Traditionally, the library has had five to six performers, but due to dwindling state funds has shortened the series and sought a co-sponsor. When Misty Bradley, bank manager of Merchants National Bank heard about the librarys dilemma, she came to their aid.
"The concerts are a great community experience of live music and great fun," said Bradley. "Were happy to partner with the library because when you attend a concert and see everyone enjoying themselves, you know youre involved in a good thing."
Merchants also will be a food sponsor for the Lone Raven concert, providing hot dogs, chips and other refreshments.
The library is located at 20 E. First St. in London and can be reached at (740) 852-9543.
