Cruiser athletes have graced playing fields and courts for more than 100 years, but Groveport Madison has never had a hall of fame honoring their achievements.
That will change as Groveport Madison High School plans to honor the first inductees into a newly established athletic hall of fame next fall. The athletic hall of fame will be located in the hallway and commons area near the gym in the high school.
"We think the hall of fame will increase community involvement as well as showcase the outstanding accomplishments of our student athletes," said Groveport Madison Athletic Director Steve Petros.
Petros said nominations for the hall of fame will be accepted until May 1. A hall of fame committee will then review the nominations and select the first class of inductees. Petros said there could be 15 to 20 inductees in the first hall of fame class.
"The challenge of the committee is that the initial class of inductees should include student athletes from representative decades from throughout the history of the athletic program," said Petros. "Some high quality athletes could miss being inducted in the first year, but they will not be forgotten and will be considered in future years."
According to Petros, the nomination guidelines are:
•nominees are eligible for consideration six years after they graduate;
•nominees can be an individual athlete, a coach, a team or a community member who has been notably active with the athletic program;
•athletes should have achieved honors such as being named all state, all district, all county, all league or similar recognition from their era; or made achievements in their post graduate athletic career.
