The National Civic League recognizes 10 communities each year for outstanding accomplishments, and community leaders believe the Hilltop could make the list.
Jay McCallister, Greater Hilltop Area Commission (GHAC) member, visited Peoria, Ill. for the Regional Neighborhood Network Conference (RNNC) last month.
McCallister said he knew little about Peoria prior, but was impressed by the prestigious title of All-America City its won four times.
To win an All-America City designation, a community must demonstrate innovation, inclusiveness, civic engagement and successful efforts to address local challenges, according to McCallister.
“I learned a neighborhood could also receive the designation,” he said. “It could be The Hilltop, U.S.A. as an All-America neighborhood.”
The RNNC drew representatives from communities in the Midwest, including the Columbus Divisions of Police and Fire.
Numerous classes were offered. McCallister said the only problem was they were too short.
“Each class was an hour long and some were so interesting and provided so much information that they could have lasted two or even three hours,” he said.
Information on applying, requirements and a full report will be given to GHAC members for further review, according to commission officials.
