Curing cancer, one prom dress at a time

Picking out that perfect prom gown for your prom night can be overwhelming and also stressful, but not anymore.

The Nellie’s Catwalk for Kids and Joan’s Bridal Couture Prom Expo will be showcasing the hottest trends for prom 2010 that will feature dresses for every body type and every personality.
This event will take place Jan. 31 at the Hilton Hotel at Easton. Guests can start arriving at noon to view more than 20 different prom related vendors. These vendors include Joan’s Bridal Couture, Kent Smith Photography, Island Tans, Classic Limousines and many more businesses to insure your prom night is perfect without the stress of going to all the different places.
The fashion show will begin at 1:30 p.m. in the afternoon in the Easton Ballroom and will feature more than 70 models representing 27 different high schools in the Columbus area. Funds from the show will benefit children with cancer through the Nellie’s Catwalk for Kids organization.
Nellie’s Catwalk for Kids (NC4K) is a local non-profit organization that raises funds for children with cancer through an annual fashion show held in the summer. This philanthropic organization was started by Reynoldsburg’s Jenelle Krumlauf, who was 16 years old at the time.
Krumlauf was driven to make a difference no matter if it was big or small. Her grandmother, Goldie Sheridan, passed away to cancer when Krumlauf was a little girl. She believes that it is not fair for anyone to go through cancer – especially children, so she took an active role in trying to raise awareness.
Over the years this organization has grown tremendously and has raised more than $30,000. NC4K has donated mainly to Nationwide Children’s Hospital Oncology Center and also the American Cancer Society. Krumlauf wanted to add another event to help get the community involved and to act as a semi-annual fashion show. Krumlauf fused her talents with Joan’s Bridal Couture to plan a prom expo. In the future Krumlauf hopes to grow NC4K to other major cities around the United States to impact even more children with cancer.
Nellie’s Catwalk for Kids and Joan’s Bridal Couture are fusing Jenelle’s passion for helping others and Joan’s passion for one of a kind prom dresses into a unique prom expo for the entire Columbus community to attend.
In addition to helping children NC4K and Joan’s Bridal Couture are asking guests to dig through their closets’ for up-to-date gently used prom dresses to help girls that are unable to afford a dress for their prom night. The prom expo is setting a goal of 1,000 dresses to be donated to the Fairy Goodmothers, a non-profit organization that helps dress girls for their prom night. The prom expo also will feature several prizes that will be given away.
Tickets are on sale now and are being sold at Island Tans in Reynoldsburg, Joan’s Bridal Couture, and through the mail. All pre-sale tickets are $10 each and tickets at the door will be $15 each.
