Violet Twp. Women's League to hold annual fundraiser

(by Christine Bryant, Eastside Editor - April 05, 2011)

Models wearing the latest style fashions will once again walk the runway while raising money for a cause that benefits students in the Violet Township community.

The Violet Township Women’s League will hold its annual style show and luncheon April 16 at the Berwick Manor Party House, 3250 Refugee Road.

The event, now in its 12th year, raises money for scholarships that go to graduating seniors in the community.

“The first style show was held 12 years ago to raise money for a family in the area who had experienced a tragedy,” said Shirley Jacobs, publicity chairman with the Violet Township Women’s League. “The local businesses responded to it generously, and it was such fun that the following year it was decided to do it again.”

Because the league is involved in community service, Jacobs said the group decided to focus on area youth by offering a community service scholarship to a graduating senior.

To qualify for the scholarship, students must be active in the community, be excelling at school and be accepted to an institute of higher education, she said.

At first, the scholarship was in the amount of $500. For the past three years, however, the organization has offered two $2,500 scholarships.

“Last year, 300 women attended (the style show), and we had 100 baskets to raffle,” Jacobs said.

Doors at this year’s event open at 11:30 a.m. Raffle tickets may be purchased at that time for the baskets that have been donated by local businesses and club members.

Lunch will be served at 12:15 p.m., followed by the style show with fashions by Kohl’s.

Baskets being raffled at this year’s event vary in themes, from Ohio State to fishermen, wines, chocolate and jewelry. A blanket with counted cross stitch, an afghan that club members took turns knitting and theater tickets also will be raffled.

“Everyone has been so generous, not only in Pickerington and along S.R. 256, but also in the surrounding communities such as Canal Winchester, Reynoldsburg, Newark and even Dublin,” Jacobs said.

Tickets must be purchased in advance and are limited in quantity. They are $21 and can be obtained by calling (614) 864-8493. More information about the style show, the Women’s League and the scholarships can be found at www.vtwl.org.
