Bexley Harvest Festival, Trick or Treat night
A Harvest Festival, co-sponsored by the Bexley Parks and Recreation Department and the Bexley Celebrations Association, will be held Oct. 19 from 6-8 p.m. at Jeffrey Mansion, 165 N. Parkview Ave.

Activities will include an Enchanted Walk, bonfire, corn maze, children's crafts and hayrides.

Trick or Treat night in Bexley will be Oct. 31, from 5:30-7:30 p.m. Volunteers are needed to monitor streets and can sign up by calling 559-4300.

Maryland "Meet the Artist" fundraiser for playground
Maryland Elementary School parents will hold a "Meet the Artist" event to raise funds for school playground improvements on Oct. 18, from 5:30 - 8 p.m. at Art Access Gallery, 540 South Drexel Avenue.  

Guests will visit with Bexley artist Marti Steffy, a Maryland parent and grandparent, view her work and enjoy refreshments.  Ten percent of any artwork sales from the evening will go to the school.  

Tickets cost $10 and can be purchased with a check to Maryland PTO and mailed to Staci Collier, 76 N. Roosevelt Avenue, Bexley, Ohio 43209.

Bexley Festival of the Arts seeking young artisans
The Kids' Gift Gallery, part of the Bexley Festival of the Arts, is accepting applications until Oct. 24 from children artisans.  This event showcases Bexley children's creativity, artistic talent, and entrepreneurial spirit, giving them opportunities to create and sell their own hand-made work.  

The Gallery will be open Dec. 1 from 10 a.m. until 2:30 p.m. at Montrose Elementary and each booth must be staffed by at least one adult and child.  A booth costs $15, with proceeds benefit the district's Artists in the School Programs.

Jeffrey Shop Hop supports Bexley recreation scholarships
The Jeffrey Mansion, a Bexley landmark and home to the city's Parks and Recreation Department at 165 N. Parkview Ave., will host the Jeffrey Shop Hop IV, November 10-11.  The Shop Hop raises funds for scholarships for programs offered through Bexley Recreation to children from Bexley and surrounding neighborhoods.  

Due to corporate support on behalf of American Electric Power and Pistacio Vera, 100 percent of all proceeds raised directly benefit the Parks and Recreation Department Scholarships and Programs.

On the evening of Nov. 9, the Shop Hop will begin with a Jaxxy Patron Preview Party from 6-10 p.m. and will include an exclusive shopping opportunity, hors d'oeuvres, and desserts provided by Pistacio Vera, and beverages.  Musical entertainment from JAZZMARY and valet parking will also be a part of the Patron event.  Admission to the Patron Party is $50 per person. The Shop Hop features  exclusive retailers such as Karen Spector's Designs from Dublin, The Collection from Powell, Tickeled Pick from London, Ohio, and more.  The Hop runs November 10-11 from 10 a.m.-6 p.m.  On Saturday,  children's crafts will be offered from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.  for children at the mansion.  Admission to the shopping event is $5, and is good for admission each day for the event.

Candidates Tyson, Samuel agree to debate
Columbus City Council candidates Heidi Samuel and Priscilla Tyson have accepted an invitation from the Clintonville Area Chamber of Commerce for a public debate on Oct. 25 during the chamber's monthly lunch meeting at 11:30 a.m. at the Clintonville Woman's Club, 3951 North High Street.

The candidates are running to fill an unexpired term that ends Dec. 31, 2009. Tyson, an eastside resident, was appointed to council to replace Mary Jo Hudson earlier this year. Samuel is the economic development director for the Eastmoor Civic Association and Blockwatch.
 
Bishop Hartley High School open house
Bishop Hartley High School invites all 7th and 8th grade students and their parents to its Fall Open House on Nov. 7 at 7 p.m. in the school's gymnasium at 1285 Zettler Road in Columbus..

Participants will have the opportunity to hear from the administration, visit with  teachers, and meet with guidance counselors, will also be able to receive information about activities and athletics and experience the nationally recognized technology program.

Students and parents can inquire about the school's Campus Ministry and service learning programs, and visit the newly expanded and renovated St. James the Greater Chapel.

'60s coffeehouse benefits Mid-Ohio Food Bank
Bexley High School graduate and radio journalist Bill Cohen will host his annual "Spirit of the 60s" coffeehouse to benefit the Mid-Ohio Food Bank, Nov. 9 at 7:30 p.m. at King Ave., Methodist Church, 299 W. King Ave. at Neil Avenue.

Cohen, who has been hosting the events for 22 years, will lead a candelit, year-by-year journey through the era, with live folk  songs, news reports of Sixties happenings, displays of anti-war buttons and posters, and fashions.

The audience will be challenged with Sixties trivia questions and awarded 1960s-themed prizes.

Proceeds from the suggested $10 donation will go to the Mid-Ohio Food Bank. Refreshments will  be available at no charge. The program is suitable for adults and mature teens.

Columbus International Festival Nov. 3-4
The 52nd annual Columbus International Festival will take place Nov. 3, from 10 a.m.-10 pm., and Nov. 4, from 11 a.m.-6 p.m., at Veterans Memorial, 300 W. Broad St.

The theme of the event is "Peace Through Understanding," and will include a global marketplace with more than 200 booths representing more than 80 countries, offering food, crafts and educational materials.

Other activities include a health fair with free screenings, yoga, pilates and aerobics, and folk dance instruction to international music, a Parade of Nations, bands and roving entertainers and children's activities.

Tickets are $5 if purchased before Oct. 20. Admission at the door is $7 for adults, $5 for students and senior citizens, $2 for children ages 6-12, and free for those 5 and under. Group rates are available.

All Hallow's Eve at Ohio Village
All Hallow's Eve, the popular historic Halloween event sponsored by The Ohio Historical Society, returns to the Ohio Village in Columbus, on Saturdays, Oct. 20 and 27. Pumpkin carving, 19th-century crafts and games, a museum of oddities, soul cakes, mini-pumpkins for the kids and storytelling by bonfire will be among the many treats in store for visitors.

Additional spirited favorites at the event include the Dancer of Mystery, Halloween fortunes and the eccentric Krazy Kate, a lost soul.

New this year is a 19th-century shadow puppet show performed by Common Stock, a historical entertainment group. The event concludes with the spooky retelling by bonfire of Washington Irving's "The Legend of Sleepy Hollow," brought to life with the infamous horseback rides of Ichabod Crane, the schoolteacher in the famous story, and the Headless Horseman.

Children activities at All Hallow's Eve will feature searching for the golden pumpkin, fortunetelling with apple peels, walking a maze and playing games such as tug of war and "three luggies."

Bunnicula, the vampire-bunny that sucks the juice out of vegetables from the popular children's book series, will make a special appearance at the reading of "Bunnicula: A Rabbit-Tale of Mystery." The event is recommended for children ages 8 and above.

The event is from 5:30 to 9:30 p.m. Food and beverages will be available for purchase. Admission is $11 per adult and $8 per child, ages 6 through 12. Parking is $4 per vehicle.

Reynoldsburg Am Spirit changes meeting location

Bexley to begin leaf collection
The Bexley Service Department will begin leaf collection Oct. 22 and continue through Dec. 21.

Leaves should be placed on the back side of the curb and not raked into the street or placed on park beds. It is unlawful to put leaves in the street, where they can cause flooding and create a traffic hazard. Violators can be cited.

No leaves will be picked up from the alleys.

Veterans Remembrance Celebration
A Veterans Remembrance Celebration, sponsored by the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints, will be held Nov. 3,   from 11 a.m. - noon, at 2135 Baldwin Road Reynoldsburg.

St. Pius K of C spaghetti dinner fundraiser
The Knights of Columbus Council 5253 of  St. Pius X Catholic Church is sponsoring an all you can eat spaghetti dinner Oct. 27 from 5:30-7 pm in the school cafeteria, 1061 Waggoner Road, Reynoldsburg.  

Dinner will include two kinds of pasta, meatballs, salad, bread sticks, dessert and hot or cold beverages.  Price is $5 for adults, $4 for seniors, $3 for children and $5 for take-out.  Proceeds will be used to benefit St. Pius X's Tuition Assistance Program and to assist a student to attend the National Catholic Youth Conference.

Bexley Library Internet classes
Bexley Public Library reference librarians will conduct Internet Basics programs that will include discussion of navigating the Internet, using the library's website and catalog, and hands-on instruction about using Internet search engines.

Each program consists of two one-hour sessions, from 2-3 pm on Oct.. 23 and 30.

A Beyond the Basics program is scheduled for Oct. 31 at 2 p.m.  Medical Information on the Web, a one-hour program, is scheduled for 2 pm on Oct.  17.

Eastside meeting to discuss stopping home invasions
The Berwyn East Civic Association will host a meeting to discuss a recent rash of home invasion robberies, Oct. 22 from 7-8:30 p.m., at Bishop Hartley High School, 1285 Zettler Road. All eastside neighborhood residents are invited to attend.

The Precinct 9 Liaison Officer, James Poole, Mark Wodarcyk from the Franklin County prosecutor's office, and Robert Beattey Jr. from the Columbus city attorney's office have been invited to attend.

Participants will learn how to protect their homes and band together to prevent further occurrences, and receive information on what happens to suspects after they are arrested and why the court process takes so long.

Bexley Halloween Concert includes costumes & candy
The Bexley High School and Middle School Orchestras will present a Halloween Concert on Oct. 24, at 7:30 p.m.  

According to Orchestra Director Sandra Crandall, her students offer the Halloween Concert only once every four or five years.  Student musicians will play pieces from Alfred Hitchcock's film "Psycho," as well as spooky favorites from musicals like "Wicked" and "Willard."

Musicians will be decked out in Halloween costumes and encourage audience members to wear costumes also.  The orchestra members hand out candy to children following the concert.

Whitehall Fire open house
In conjunction with Fire Prevention Week, the Whitehall Division of Fire will have an open house Oct. 13 from 2-4 p.m., with tours and a safety presentation at 3. Refreshments will be served.

Whitehall Lion's Club spaghetti dinner
The Whitehall Lion's Club spaghetti dinner will be Oct. 14 at 169 Fairport Road from noon-3 p.m.  Cost is $3 for children under 12 and $6 for adults.

Consortium for Good Government candidates' nights
The Franklin County Consortium for Good Government and the League of Women Voters have scheduled the following meet the candidates' nights:

Brookwood Presbyterian Church, 2685 E. Livingston Ave., will host an event Oct. 16, from 6:30-9 p.m., with candidates for Columbus mayor and Bexley mayor, city council and school board invited.

The event will begin with a meet and greet, followed by the candidates answering questions from the audience.

Reynoldsburg VFW fundraiser a musical mystery show
The Reynoldsburg VFW will hold a building fundraiser on Oct. 20,  with an  original interactive musical mystery show performed by Random Acts from Toledo.

The show features sing a-longs, dance a-longs and crypts-full of audience participation vampire ceremonies. Join DeMon and Lenore Graves and the Eternal Order of the Vampires this Halloween.  Be ready to  sing a-long and play a role and come in costume.
 
The evening will be a volunteer effort of the VFW Post, their Ladies Auxiliary and Men's Auxiliary. The profit will be used for new carpet and building repairs.

The ticket price is $25 per person. Chef Meg is preparing a ghoulishly delicious dinner of Shepherd's Pie, Wormy Potatoes, salad, and dessert. Doors open at 5:30 p.m., with dinner at 6 and the show following.

Bexley Community Book club plans talk with Internet show host
The Bexley Community Book Club is partnering with the Bexley Public Library to host the book talk in its auditorium on Oct. 14 at 3 p.m.  This first event features Kacey Kowars, host of a popular Internet book show.

Kowars' topic is titled, "What Makes a Good Book Great?"  Kowars will discuss the process he uses to choose featured books for his show.  

Kowar's web-based author interview program, known as The Kacey Kowars Show, first aired on the Internet on August 4, 2004, and is listened to in every region of the world.  

The goal of the show is to offer readers a platform to hear their favorite authors discuss their most current work.  More than 125 interviews are currently archived on the website (www.kaceykowars.com).  

Nationally acclaimed writer Pete Hamill, the inaugural author of Bexley Community Book Club, discussed his most recent novel, North River (Little, Brown & Co.) on The Kacey Kowars Show in July of 2007.    

The Bexley Public Library also will host the second book talk featuring Kowars on Jan. 13.  Kowars will focus on the books of Pete Hamill and his 40-year journey as a writer.   

The year-long Bexley Community Book Club initiative aims to promote reading and showcase Bexley's belief in the importance of education and lifelong learning.  

Partnerships with WBNS 10TV and Barnes and Noble Booksellers at Easton have been established to create awareness and encourage community participation.  

Additional in-school programs are being planned to expose students to several Hamill books.  All events will culminate in the special community-wide appearance by Hamill at Bexley High School on April 30.       

Fall festival in Whitehall
A fall festival, sponsored by City of Refuge Baptist Church and the City of Whitehall, will be held Oct. 31 from 6-8 p.m. in the former Big Bear parking lot at 4750 E. Main St.
Admission is free and the event will include candy, games, inflatable jump houses, a Ferris wheel, hay ride, food, and prizes.

Jewish Singles Over 40 get-together
Jewish singles in their 40s and 50s are invited to attend a get-together for music and drinks at Smith & Wollensky at Easton Oct. 19 from 8-10 p.m.

Eastview United Methodist concert series

Whitehall Halloween Walk
Whitehall Community Celebration Association (WCCA) will be sponsoring the annual Halloween Walk Oct. 27 from 1-3 p.m.  It will begin at the fire station, 390 S. Yearling Road, Whitehall.  There will be volunteers on hand to safely escort the children.
 
Military Officers Club
The Military Officers Club of Central Ohio  luncheon meetings are held the second Friday of the month at the Berwick Manor Party House at Refugee Road and Winchester Pike.

The local chapter represents 344 retired military officers, widows and widowers and a ladies' auxiliary. The organization was founded in 1953 and provides members with legislative information, local news, information on survivorship benefits, and speakers, including members of Congress and local journalists.

•"Uncloaked," compiled, adapted and directed by Communication Professor Dan Heaton, Oct. 11-14.
 In "Uncloaked," Heaton looks at the various versions and psychological underpinnings of the classic fairy tale Little Red Riding Hood. Although the show deals with a classic fairy tale, this performance is not appropriate for children.
•"Little Shop of Horrors," the musical about a flower shop schlep and the man-eating plant he creates by Howard Ashman and Alan Menken, Nov. 15-18.
•"Twelfth Night," a comedy by William Shakespeare, Feb. 14-17.
•One-Act Play Festival, a series of student-directed plays, April 17-20.

Mothers of Multiples meets
The Mothers of Multiples of East Columbus meets the third Thursday of each month at 7 p.m., at the Church of the Redeemer United Methodist, 235 McNaughten Road (south of Broad Street), for social time, a business meeting, and speaker or group activity.

The group produces a monthly newsletter for members, offers many social family and moms-only events, and hosts a clothing, toy and equipment sale twice a year.

Capital's Schumacher Gallery announces 2007-08 season
Capital University's Schumacher Gallery has announced its schedule of exhibits for the 2007-08 season.

"Some Assembly Required," with artists using non-traditional materials to explore the potential of collage and assemblage, will run from Oct. 29-Dec. 7. An opening reception will be held Nov. 2 from 5-7 p.m.

"Beyond Boundaries," featuring self-taught artists who use unconventional subjects, techniques and materials, will be presented Jan. 11-Feb. 15. The exhibit, co-sponsored by Art Access, will have an opening reception Jan. 11 from 5-7 p.m.

"Art on a String," with Asian kites in a variety of imaginative shapes associated with festivals, holidays and special events, will take flight March 3-April 11. An opening reception will take place March 7 from 5-7 p.m.

Capital University's Student Art Exhibition will be held April 18-26, with a meet-the-artists reception April 18 from 5-7 p.m.

The Schumacher Gallery, which includes an extensive permanent collection of European, American, Asian, African and Inuit art, is located on the fourth floor of the Blackmore Library. Hours are Monday-Saturday, 1-5 p.m., during the school year. Admission is free.

Bexley Farmers' Market
Bexley Farmers' Market will be held Saturdays from 10 am. to 1 p.m. in front of City Hall, 2242 E. Main St., through October. A variety of fresh fruits, vegetables, herbs, flowers and other items directly from farmers will be available.

Columbus-Whitehall Toastmasters
The Columbus-Whitehall Toastmasters will meet the second and fourth  Tuesdays of each month at the Whitehall Municipal Building,  360 S. Yearling Rd, 7:30 to 9 p.m. All visitors are welcome.

JCC events

The Leo Yassenoff Jewish Community Center, at 1125 College Ave., has provided the following announcements:

Membership Appreciation Week includes activities, discounts
The JCC of Greater Columbus is planning its first Member Appreciation Week, set for Oct. 15-21.

"Member Appreciation Week is not only a way to say, 'Thank You' to our patrons, but also a great opportunity for some of our departments to showcase their work," said Linda Starr, JCC membership director.

Each day will focus on a department, complete with raffles, giveaways, information and displays about their programs.

On Monday, Oct. 15, the Aquatics Department will be conducting free scuba diving lessons in the evening and raffling off two free swim lessons.

Additional events during the week include:
•An international fair conducted by students of the JCC's English as a Second Language (ESOL) department on Tuesday;
•Raffles and treats at all three JCC preschool sites on Wednesday.
•Free yoga and pilates classes, as well as arthritis swim classes, focusing on the JCC's recreation and fitness programs on Thursday.
•A special Shabbat luncheon for Seniors on Friday.
•Two-for-one tickets to the Saturday performance of Gallery Players' production of "Jerry's Girls".
•Kosher recipes from Chef Tony Robertson, as well as bagels in lobby, on Sunday.

School's out trip to Circleville Pumpkin Show
School is out for area students on Friday, Oct. 19, and the JCC is sponsoring a "School's Out Day," and will be taking children to the Circleville Pumpkin Show.

Everyone will have the opportunity to enjoy rides, fall crafts and of course pumpkins and maybe even get to see the world's largest pumpkin pie. Afterward, the group will return to the center for an afternoon of swimming in the JCC's indoor pool.

The event is open to all area children in kindergarten through sixth grade, including the Columbus Jewish Day School. The JCC will have a bus picking children up at the day school at 8:15 a.m. to go to the JCC, and dropping them back off at 4 p.m.

The fee for the program is $55 for JCC members and $75 for nonmembers, and includes transportation. (Fulltime Kinderclub members pay only $20.) A discount of $5 off for the second child, and an additional $3 for the third (or more) child also is available.

JCC Member Art Exhibit on display
The JCC Juried Member Art Exhibit is open, with 32 pieces chosen from among the more than 60 works of art submitted by members of the JCC on display in the lobby of the Jewish Community Center, 1125 College Ave.

The works of art, done by professional and emerging artists alike, offer a wide range of media. Everything from recycled objects (including baskets and seashells) to fiber art, and woodworking to crewel, as well as more traditional paintings and sketches, are included in the exhibit.

Among the pieces selected were:
•"Pointing to the One," by Columbus artist Hani Hara, a vibrantly hued acrylic on canvas painting depicting a group of worshippers.
•"She Flew Away," by German Village artist Lindsey Alexander, a clay cup depicting a story about a family of ducks living downtown.
•"Hanging My Tears Out To Dry," by emerging artist Geno Schifrin of Bexley, an artwork of recycled objects depicting his mourning for his late wife.

The exhibit is open now through Nov. 4 during the JCC's normal hours of operation: Monday through Thursday, from 6 a.m. to 10 p.m.; Friday, from 6 a.m. to 6 p.m.; Saturday, from 1:30 to 6 p.m.; and Sunday, from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m.

Holiday Bazaar vendors sought
The JCC Early Childhood Parent committee is seeking vendors for its annual Holiday Bazaar Nov. 18, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.

The Holiday Bazaar showcases the work of artisans from across central Ohio. Each vendor has the opportunity to display and sell their goods during the bazaar, which is free and open to the community.

Sports Spectacular continues Oct. 22 with sports writer, awards
The 20th annual Sports Spectacular will kick off the second half of the split-format event Oct. 22 for an evening of recognition and celebration honoring Dr. Fred Davidorf, Allan Byer and David Kass.

The Sports Spectacular, co-chaired this year by Jon Meyer and Eric Wasserstrom, is one of the city's premiere fundraisers for JCC programs.

On Oct. 22, the JCC will welcome Jeremy Schaap, host of ESPN's "Outside the Lines" and author of "Cinderella Man: James J. Braddock, Max Baer, and the Greatest Upset in Boxing History." He is a regular contributor to Nightline and ABC World News Tonight and has been published in Sports Illustrated, ESPN The Magazine, Time, Parade, and the New York Times. Schaap also is the author of "Triumph: The Untold Story of Jesse Owens and Hitler's Olympics."

Schaap will be the keynote speaker of a night that will be highlighted by the presentation of the Charles Solomon Award to Dr. Fred Davidorf and the Jewish Sports Hall of Fame Induction Ceremony of Allan Byer and David Kass.

The Charles Solomon Award has been given at each Sports Spectacular event to recognize an individual who personifies a lifetime commitment to JCC sports and fitness programs, for which Charles Solomon stood. Dr. Davidorf, professor emeritus of The Ohio State University's Department of Ophthalmology and a leading expert in the field of eye cancer, has been a long-time supporter of the JCC and continues to participate in JCC sports leagues.

The Jewish Sports Hall of Fame was established in 1979 to recognize Jewish individuals from Columbus who have excelled in the world of athletics.

As a principal partner/owner of the San Francisco Giants baseball team, Allan Byer was a stand-out high school athlete in both baseball and basketball during his teenage years in Columbus.
