SWAC gets annual budget of $1,000
(by Dedra Cordle, staff writer - January 20, 2011)
The 2011 budget is set for the Southwest Area Commission.
At the Jan. 19 meeting, the commissioners discussed how they were going to allocate the $1,000 given to them by the city of Columbus to maintain operations throughout the year.
The largest chunk of the budget will go towards rent.
Fiscal officer Kathy Hatfield said they would have to pay New Horizons United Methodist Church $480 to rent the room where they hold their monthly meetings. The cost to lease the space is on par from previous years.
The commission briefly discussed allocating $100 for conference fees in case they wanted to attend the 2011 Regional Neighborhood Network Conference in Cincinnati, but ultimately decided to put the money to other uses.
They agreed to reserve the money for the conference fee to pay for postage and save the rest for advertising efforts.
They allocated $200 to go towards banners and signs and $220 for commission gear such as T-shirts and hats.
Neighborhood Cleanup Project
Starting the day after Earth Day, the commission will gather to dispose of litter among major corridors in order to beautify the area. They decided to host additional cleanup days on June 18 and Sept. 20.
For the past two years, the commission has held a neighborhood cleanup once a month during the summer, but decided to change it to every other month because of low volunteer turnout.
