Murder, mystery and dinner in West Jefferson

(by Kristy Zurbrick, Madison Editor - September 07, 2010)

The West Jefferson Community Association (WJCA) and Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 7005 will host a murder mystery dinner on Oct. 7 to raise money for Adopt-A-Family.

It’s no mystery how much Adopt-A-Family helps needy West Jefferson families at Christmas time. Last year, through donations from the community, the annual program provided toys and clothes to 95 children from the Jefferson Local School District.

“This is the first time we’re doing a murder mystery dinner as a fund-raiser for the program. I figure, if we’re going to ask for donations, we might as well have people get something for their money, something fun,” said coordinator Vickie Hockenbery.

Cloak & Dagger Theatre, a murder mystery troupe out of Columbus, will perform “Murder at Bedside Manor,” a humorous show geared for adults. The event will take place at the VFW post, 1 Veterans Way, West Jefferson. Doors open at 6:15 p.m. Dinner and the show start at 7.

The meal will include a choice of prime rib or chicken marsala, twice baked potato, fried corn, fresh rolls, salad, dessert, tea and coffee. A cash bar will be available.

Tickets are $30 per person and can be purchased at the VFW, Huntington Bank in West Jefferson, the Madison County Sheriff’s Office in London, or Mike’s Pizza at Choctaw Lake.

“We are selling 120 tickets to this event and are hoping for a sellout,” said Hockenbery, who aims to have the tickets sold by Oct. 1.

Several groups and individuals are donating goods and services to make the evening possible. Jenni and Tony McFarland are donating their catering services to cook the meal. The VFW Men’s Auxiliary and Pat and Nena Dillon of Kambree’s Kids have donated money to purchase food. The VFW is supplying the use of its banquet room at no charge.

“The VFW has always been a part of the Adopt-A-Family program,” Hockenbery said. “They donate the use of their banquet room during wrapping and distribution of gifts to the families at Christmas time. Also, many members volunteer to help with these events.”
