Madison-Plains rated Effective
(by Kristy Zurbrick, Madison Editor - September 01, 2010)
Madison-Plains Local Schools received an “Effective” rating on the 2009-10 report card from the Ohio Department of Education.
Last year, the district was rated “Excellent.” The six possible designations are Excellent With Distinction, Excellent, Effective, Continuous Improvement, Academic Watch and Academic Emergency.
“Sometimes, it’s hard to figure these things. We met 21 of the 26 indicators and were named Effective. Then you have districts like Groveport Madison that only met eight of the 26 indicators and also were named Effective,” said Madison-Plains Superintendent Boone Hall.
Madison-Plains’ overall performance on the state report card was fairly similar to last year when it met 24 of the 30 indicators the state tracked at the time. The district’s performance index score was down less than one point on a 120-point scale. It met value-added goals, whereas the year before it exceeded them. For the second year, the district did not meet federal standards for adequate yearly progress.
“We do the best we can, look at the areas where we’re coming up short and do more for those particular students,” Hall said.
He said one of the biggest needs lies with students who have not been part of the Madison-Plains system for at least two years.
Individual school results
Two schools in the district retained their “Excellent” designation: Madison-Plains High School and Mount Sterling Elementary. Two schools kept their “Effective” ratings: Madison Rural and Midway Elementary.
Madison-Plains Middle School went from “Excellent” last year to “Effective” this year. The only portion of the state report card in which the school received a lower rating was value-added. Last year, the district was rated “above,” which means students showed more than a year’s worth of progress. This year, the district “met” the criteria, which means students showed a year’s worth of progress.
Otherwise, the middle school increased the percentage of indicators it met, slightly improved its performance index score, and met adequate yearly progress whereas it didn’t meet the mark in that category last year.
