Photos: Circus comes to West Jefferson

(by Jeff Pfeil, staff photographer - August 24, 2010)

West Jefferson welcomed the Lewis and Clark Circus to the Ox Roast Grounds on Aug. 20. Sponsored by the Madison County Chamber of Commerce, the circus put on two shows, one at 5 p.m. and one at 7:30 p.m. The performers then tore down and left town by 6:30 a.m. the next day to travel to their next set of shows.

Xavier Smith, 4, and Christiana Jones, 8, of Columbus ride a camel prior to the start of the 5 p.m. show.

Cameryn Blythe, 3, of Plain City transforms into a cat before entering the big tent.

Sam Couch, 4, of Worthington takes a ride on a pony.  He brought his grandparents to the circus with him.

Miss Rebecca performs on the trapeze to open the Lewis and Clark Circus. She also served as the host for the shows and painted children’s faces before the shows.

Young and old alike show their approval of the single-ring show. Despite the high temperature inside the giant tent, the crowd had a good time.

Josh Bateman of West Jefferson came out of the crowd to help with Emmanuel’s
escape act. Bateman’s “job” was to inspect the chains before Emmanuel’s assent
into the air, dangling upside down by a burning rope.

Dressed to impress, Sophia Nelson slurps down a sno-kone.

Scotty Arnold, 8, from Worthington holds a cup of feed for a hungry llama. A few
seconds later, the llama grabbed the cup, ate the food, then spit out the cup, ready
for more.
