HEFFLEY
Mary Pauline (Motil) Heffley, nee Maria Paulina Motylova, 90, was born on April 24, 1920, in Lipiany, Czechoslovakia, to John and Paulina (Sedlak) Motyl. She died Aug. 12 at Mount Sterling Place where she resided for the last four and a half years. After her mother died when Mary was around 2 years old, her father came to America. In 1930, Mary, age 10, and her brother, Steve, age 15, left from Germany on a steamship to come to America where their father had been for seven years. They arrived at Ellis Island in New York, where they stayed for two weeks because of a mix-up in their papers. Finally they traveled by train to around Byesville, Ohio, where they were met by their father and five new siblings. After she was married, Mary moved from Columbus in the early 1940s to Mount Sterling. She became a U.S. citizen in 1943. Mary was a wonderful, very loving, kind and caring mother and grandmother. She enjoyed cooking, baking, sewing, knitting, crocheting and gardening. Mary’s last name, Motylova, means butterfly in Slovak. She lived up to the name. She was a quiet, gentle spirit who loved nothing more than to be outside flitting around her flower gardens. Mary was employed for a time at Ohio Willow Wood and Orient State Institute, but spent most of her life as a caregiver for numerous elderly people in the Mount Sterling, Lilly Chapel and West Jefferson areas. While Mary was never afforded the opportunity of a formal education, she was a very well educated, creative lady. She finished four years of school in Czechoslovakia and completed four years in America in only two years. Although she never received a diploma and was largely self-taught, she loved reading and learning new things. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Mount Sterling Public Library/Museum, 60 W. Columbus St., Mount Sterling, OH 43143, or to Mount Sterling Community Center, 164 E. Main Street, Mount Sterling, OH 43143. A funeral service was held Aug. 18 in Porter Funeral Home, Mount Sterling.
