Commission welcomes new members
The Southwest Area Commission welcomed several new members at their Aug. 18 meeting.
David D’Antonio, Carolyn Nobile and Leah Markham were awarded seats, based on the results of the Aug. 3 elections. They each said they wanted to run for a commission seat because they were interested in knowing what was happening within the community.
“I want to know what is going on and I want to know what may be coming,” said Nobile. “I want to be informed.”
Nobile also expressed her desire to try to establish a homeowners’ association in the area.
Markham said her goal as a commissioner is to clean up areas like the Frank Road corridor, and D’Antonio said that even though he had no specific goals in mind when running for a commission seat, he would “serve where (he) can.”
During the meeting, commissioners appointed four at-large seats as well. Three of those seats went to current members Ralph Horn, Juanita Kaufman and Kathleen Williamson-Thacker. The remaining seat went to Everett Kirk, who has served on the commission before but took a year off.
Due to scheduling conflicts with Neighborhood Pride, the Southwest Area Commission meeting originally scheduled for Sept. 15 has been cancelled. The commission said they would call for an emergency meeting if needed.
Residents are encouraged to attend Mayor Michael B. Coleman’s community bike ride, which takes place on Sept. 15 at the Central Baptist Church, located at 1955 Frank Road. The bike ride is slated to begin at 6 p.m.
