This year’s annual Madison County Hospital Foundation County Classic golf outing was held Aug. 11-12 at the London Country Club. Each year the event raises over $20,000 to improve health care services in Madison County.
While this year was just as successful, everyone felt the absence of Bob Powers, who had been an integral part of the golf outing for over 20 years. Powers passed away Aug. 8, just three days before the event that he had helped to plan since the first County Classic in 1989.
“This year is bittersweet for all of us,” said Mona Flax, executive director of the Hospital Foundation. “While we enjoyed a wonderful event, we do so miss our County Classic founder and 21-year chair, Bob Powers.”
At the conclusion of the golf outing, Flax announced that the event will now be known as the Bob Powers Classic to honor Powers’ commitment to hospital and the golf outing.
In past years, the County Classic supported the Foundation’s Breast Cancer Initiative. Recently, the initiative reached $2 million, thanks to the generous support of thecommunity. Since beginning the initiative, the hospital has added digital mammography, another general surgeon, and all the equipment necessary to diagnose and treat breast cancer. Also, there is now an endowment fund to ensure that every woman in Madison County can access breast cancer treatment.
This year, funds raised from the outing will help bring electronic medical records to the hospital.
“This national initiative is one that improves patient safety and quality of care, and we want to lead the way among small hospitals in adding this important technology,” said Randy Crisp, MCH Foundation president.
At this year’s County Classic, golfers competed for two days in individual and team competitions.
Wednesday’s 16 four-person golf teams competed in a shamble with awards for the low gross team and the low net team.
Low Gross Team: Mike Alexander, Dick Johnston, Phil Jordan and Pat Thomas.
Low Net Team: Aaron Dwyer, Bob Hackett, Sue Hackett and Dave Wheatley.
Thursday’s 18 six-person golf teams competed in a classic scramble.
First Place Scramble Team: Don Hammer, Brandon Wheeler, Chad Wheeler, Larry Wheeler, and Tom Whitaker.
Second Place Scramble Team: Mike Alexander, Tony Brake, Steve Evans, Jim Herman, Mike Quilter, and Dave Wallace.
Golfers also competed individually for closest to the pin and longest putt on two specific holes. The winners in the men’s competition were Chad Wheeler for closest to the pin and Eric Thompson for longest putt. Kay Majka won both the closest to the pin and longest putt for the women.
“Please mark your calendars on August 10 and 11 for next year’s Bob Powers Classic and join us in remembering and celebrating our remarkable friend, Bob Powers,” Flax said.
