Plain City service day: Don't just go to church; BE the church
(Posted Aug. 18, 2010)
“Don’t just go to church. BE the Church.”
This is the invitation the churches of Plain City are extending to their congregations and the larger community on Sept. 5.
The 21 churches of the Plain City Church Fellowship are sponsoring the second annual “BE the Church Sunday.” Participating churches are canceling their usual Sunday morning activities and worship services to focus on serving the community.
Approximately five hundred people gathered for the event last year. Organizers are preparing for double the number of participants this year.
Members of the community will gather at Plain City’s Pastime Park at 8:30 a.m. for a brief time of worship and prayer. Then they will spread through the community to complete service projects, including activities like general maintenance and painting at Pastime Park, visiting residents at area nursing homes, making blankets for foster children, washing windows at the local retirement community, cleaning gutters and feeding those in need.
Additionally, neighborhood festivals are planned at Green Meadows trailer park, Canaan Community trailer park and Pastime Park. The American Red Cross Blood Drive mobile unit also will be at the park.
After serving in the community, participants will return to the park to share a meal.
“We really believe we can do more together than we can alone,” said Blaine Keene, president of the Plain City Church Fellowship. “This year’s theme verses in Isaiah 54:1-4 challenges us all to think big when it comes to ‘Being the Church’ in Plain City.”
Nine churches in the Plain City Church Fellowship will cancel their regular Sunday morning activities to participate in service projects. The remaining 12 churches will participate in service before and after their regular worship services.
This event is open to anyone who wants to make a positive difference in the Plain City area. For more information, contact Blaine Keene at pastor@plaincityumc.org or (614) 873-4513. Sign-up for projects at www.bethechurchplaincity.org.
Regular Sunday services will be canceled at the following churches: Agape Fellowship, Alleluia! Lutheran, Cornerstone Mennonite, Darby Grace Brethren, Maranatha Community, Plain City Presbyterian, Plain City United Methodist, Pulse Christian and Vineyard Plain City.
Other sponsoring churches include: Big Darby Baptist, Carmel Christian, Cornerstone Church of Christ in Christian Union, Crusade Bible, Lighthouse Mennonite, Living Waters, New California Presbyterian, Plumwood United Methodist, Saint Joseph Catholic, Sharon Mennonite, Shiloh Mennonite and True Faith Community.
