Cruise-in proceeds will help to fight ALS

(Posted Aug. 11, 2010)

The fourth annual Cruise-in To Defeat ALS will take place from 5 to 8 p.m. Aug. 22 at Takacs Family Ice Cream, 129 W. High St. in London.

Anyone is welcome to show off their older vehicle. All entrants receive a free milk shake. The Music Men of London will perform at 6:30 p.m. The ice cream shop will donate part of their profits from the evening to the cause.

A raffle drawing is set for 7. Raffle winners must be present to claim their prizes. The possibilities include Mastercard gift cards in the amounts of $250, $100 and $50, Ann & Tony’s Restaurant gift certificates, and two tickets to the 2010 Ohio State University football game against the Miami Hurricanes. Tickets are $1 each or six for $5 and can be purchased prior to or at the cruise-in.

“It’s a casual, fun event. People come to hang out, talk and have a good time,” said Liz Blakeslee, who holds the event in memory of her father, Jim, who suffered from ALS (amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, commonly known as Lou Gehrig’s disease). Jim passed away in 2005.

“My main focus is to make people more aware of what the disease is and how it can affect anyone,” Blakeslee said.

ALS is a progressive neurodegenerative disease that affects nerve cells in the brain and the spinal cord. There is no cure or treatment that will halt or reverse ALS, but there are devices and therapies that can manage symptoms and a drug that slightly slows the progress of the disease.

Proceeds from the cruise-in will benefit the Central & Southern Ohio chapter of the ALS Association. For more information, go to www.alsa.org.
