Semi damages trestle and closes township road

At the Aug. 10 Pleasant Township Board of Trustees meeting, the road department's superintendent announced they would have to close a township road due to a driver ignoring the signs.
Last Thursday, a semi-truck tried to make its way through the underpass of the railroad trestle on Denton Road. The trailer, carrying yogurt, was 13 feet by 6 feet. The underpass has a clearance of 12 feet. There was damage to the top of the trailer and to the trestle.
"The trailer hit the top of the underpass and broke loose the perforated mesh that was just installed," said Jeff Karn.
Because of the hanging mesh, Denton Road will have to be closed until RailAmerica can come out and fix it, which may not happen until the first part of September, he explained.
As for the semi-truck, Franklin County Sheriff's Office deputy John Rautio said the quarter top of the trailer was ripped off. The driver was uninjured and given a ticket.
Denton Road was recently reopened in June after being closed for six month due to concrete particles falling off the trestle and landing on the street below.
The aftermath of the semi-truck incident may also pose a problem for the fire department. Construction work is being done in the area, and Stahl Road is due for an alignment makeover soon.
"I don't know when Stahl Road will be closed, but it will happen," said Karn.
He said if Denton Road and Stahl Road are closed at the same time, the fire department would have to go "clear round" Orient to get to Stahl and Denton Roads.
Trustee Dale Worthington suggested they should alert the Scioto Township Fire Department, as they would possibly be the closest responders should an emergency arise.
