Pickerington landmark gets new look

(by Kim Lunsford, staff writer - August 10, 2010)

Since the first game in the fall of 1966 against Canal Winchester, Tiger Stadium, also known as “the Ditch,” has been host to teams from around the area and a very intense student section.

“Tiger supporters have laid the framework for the tradition of excellence in Pickerington Central athletics,” resident Jeff Baker said. “Now community members have the opportunity to be a part of this tradition and help ensure its legendary future.”

Baker is leading a campaign to raise funds to add to the community feel of Tiger Stadium.

Called the Tiger Stadium Brick Campaign, the effort involves adding new brick piers at the entrance of the stadium.

Located at the top of the walkway down to the stadium, the piers will include engraved 4-by-12-inch utility bricks that include the donor’s name. The pier bricks are $100 each.

At the top of the engraved bricks will be limestone tiger heads and additional bricks that will be topped out by a limestone sign reading “Tigers.”

“Tiger Stadium has a lot of history,” Baker said.

In addition to the pier bricks, donors can purchase an 8-by-8-inch paving brick that will lead Tiger supporters and visitors alike down the walkway to the stadium. Those bricks are $125 each.

All additional proceeds will support the Pickerington Central Department of Athletics.

“I have five kids who have all gone through the Pickerington Central School District,” Baker said. “I woke up one night thinking of what I could do. The stadium itself has so much history. I encourage the community to be a part of Tiger Stadium tradition and buy a brick.”

Construction is slated to be completed by Aug. 31. Orders are being extended to Aug. 12 for the pier bricks and Aug. 31 for the paving brick. Order forms can be printed from the website.

Those interested in purchasing a brick or donating time or supplies should call Jeff Baker at (614) 774-6439 or visit www.pickeringtontigers.org.
