Repairs for Stringtown Road planned
(by Andrea Cordle, Southwest Editor - August 05, 2010)
City officials want to get funding in order to start repairs on Stringtown Road.
At the Aug. 2 meeting, Grove City Council unanimously approved an ordinance to appropriate $22,000 for phase two of corridor improvements.
The city plans to submit a grant and loan application to the Ohio Public Works Commission for Stringtown Road improvements, between Hoover and McDowell roads.
The work would include pavement reconstruction, a sidewalk and trail connection, curb and gutter repairs, decorative street lighting and drainage improvements. Repairs are also planned for the sanitary sewer system in the area.
City Administrator Phil Honsey said it is a large project in terms of infrastructure.
"It is a very ambitious project," said Honsey.
The project is scheduled to begin in 2012.
Windsor Park trail
Council passed an ordinance to set aside $365,000 from the general fund for the Town Center and Windsor Park trail construction.
The construction would connect a trail from the park to the city's downtown area.
The city received two grants through the Ohio Department of Natural Resources for $365,000. This amount would reimburse the general fund.
The city is sharing project funds with the state. City leaders have already appropriated $235,000 for the project.
Construction on the trail is set to begin in the next few weeks.
Center of Learning
Grove City Mayor Richard "Ike" Stage said the city plans to hold a ribbon cutting ceremony and education fair on Aug. 17 at the Southwest Career Academy.
The Career Academy will temporarily house the Center of Learning, where several higher education institutes will share space. Ashland University, Otterbein College and Columbus State Community College, to name a few, have expressed interest in the Grove City location.
Evening classes will begin this fall. The Career Academy will be used until the city finds a permanent location for the Center of Learning.
The ribbon cutting and education fair will be at 5:30 p.m. Representatives from each school will be on hand for those interested in signing up for classes.
