Jackson Townshp seeks funding for fourth fire station

(by Andrea Cordle, Southwest Editor - August 05, 2010)

Jackson Township is in the running for federal funds to help build a new fire station.

In July, the township was notified they were being considered for a Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) grant to build its fourth fire station. FEMA set aside approximately $200 million in grants for municipalities to build fire stations. Jackson Township applied for about $1.3 million in federal funds.

In 2006, the township purchased five acres of land near the intersection of Buckeye Parkway and Holton Road.

"We're convinced that's a great location for a fire station," said Mike Lilly, township administrator.

Lilly said the cost to construct the fire station would be approximately $2.1 million. The township also has a tax increment financing (TIF) agreement with the city of Grove City on the property.

Lilly explained the township had applied for the federal funds last year. He said FEMA has received hundreds of applications from all over the country.

Township officials should know if they will receive the funds in early September.

The township already has three fire stations located at Hoover Road, Grove City Road and State Route 665 (London-Groveport Road).

The fire department serves about 40,000 people in Grove City. Lilly said on any given day, that number at least doubles with shoppers, visitors and area workers. He also said the department provides service to the highways.

The township will host a public meeting on Aug. 31 at 7 p.m. at the Grove City Church of the Nazarene to discuss a fire station in the Creekside area. Residents are encouraged to attend.
