Working trees work for you
If you can grow an average of 180 bushels of corn per acre, why should you plant trees in Madison County? When someone has to pay off loans and meet other financial demands, this question is a challenge to answer if he or she does not understand all of the benefits of trees.
The Madison Soil and Water Conservation District is holding a free workshop to educate landowners on how to combine agriculture and forestry practices to yield environmental, economic and social benefits. Julia Cumming, program administrator for the Madison Soil and Water Conservation District, will provide information on conservation programs that can help pay for the cost of planting trees and provide annual income.
The Vicks have been implementing an approved forestry plan for many years. One example of its payoff: They planted willows and other trees to solve a streambank erosion problem.
