Open houses and more gear kids up for school

Check out these important back-to-school dates.
Jonathan Alder Local Schools
The first day of school is Aug. 24.
• Monroe Elementary—Kindergarten and preschool orientation, 6-7 p.m. Aug. 18; School Year’s Eve Party and Title One Literacy Night, 5-6 p.m. Aug. 23
• Plain City Elementary—New student registration, Aug. 11-13 (call 614-873-4608); School Year’s Eve, 5:30-6:30 p.m. Aug. 23; PTO carnival, Sept. 11, noon-3 p.m.
• Canaan Middle School—Home room class lists posted, Aug. 13; fifth-grade orientation, Aug. 18 at 7 p.m.; sixth-grade orientation, Aug. 19 at 7 p.m.
• Junior High—Orientation night, 6:30 p.m. Aug. 26
• High School—Music Boosters kickoff cookout, Aug. 10 at 6:30 p.m. at music concession stand; Freshman and new student orientation, 7 p.m. Aug. 17; textbook and schedule pickup, Aug. 17 from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. and 4 to 8 p.m., Aug. 19 from 4 to 8 p.m., and Aug. 23 from 3 to 6 p.m.
Jefferson Local Schools
The first day of school is Aug. 24.
• Norwood Elementary—Open house, 6-7 p.m. Aug. 23
London City Schools
The first day of school is Aug. 24.
• Enrollment for students who are new to the district will take place Aug. 9-18 from 9 to 11 a.m. and 1:30 to 3:30 p.m., Monday through Friday. Anyone who enrolls between Aug. 19 and Aug. 24 won’t start school until Aug. 26. Students who enroll after Aug. 24 will have a one-day delay before starting school. Go to www.london.k12.oh.us and click on the “Enrollment” tab to find out what paperwork is needed to enroll.
Madison-Plains Local Schools
The first day of school is Aug. 24. Kindergarteners start Aug. 26.
• Madison Rural Elementary—Open house and ice cream social, 6 p.m. Aug. 23
• Midway Elementary—Open house, 6:30 p.m. Aug. 23
• Mount Sterling Elementary—Open house, 6 p.m. Aug. 23
• Madison-Plains Middle School—Open house, 6 p.m. Aug. 20
• Madison-Plains High school—Open house and freshman orientation, 7 p.m. Aug. 19, gym
Saint Patrick School
The first day of school is Aug. 24.
• Kindergarten and new student orientation—6:30 p.m. Aug. 19
• Grades 1-5—Curriculum night, 5:45 p.m. Aug. 31
• Grades 6-8—Curriculum night, 7 p.m. Aug. 31
• Septemberfest—5:30-9:30 p.m. Sept. 25
Shekinah Christian School
The first day of school for Shekinah Christian School is Aug. 18. The new student orientation for the high school is Aug. 12.
Tolles Career and Technical Center
The first day of school is Aug. 24. An ice cream social and new student orientation is set for 5:30-8 p.m. Aug. 19.
London Alumni Soccer Game
The London High School boys’ varsity soccer team will host the fourth annual varsity/alumni soccer match on Aug. 21 at the high school. This year there is an addition to the schedule with a girls game at 4 p.m. The boys will play at 6.
Takacs Ice Cream will provide players with hot dogs. Soccer parents will provide free water to players (spectators will pay $1). Bake sale proceeds will go to the high school soccer program.

West Jefferson back-to-school clothing giveaway
West Jefferson United Methodist Church, 36 S. Center St., is accepting donations of gently used clothes and new school supplies on or before Aug. 16 for their annual back-to-school clothing and school supply giveaway. If the church is locked, drops can be made at the door to the parking lot. The giveaway will be held from 2 to 3 p.m. Aug. 18 and from 10 a.m. to noon Aug. 21. Free backpacks in Plain City
Plain City Druggist, 480 S. Jefferson Ave., is offering free backpacks filled with school supplies to first- and second-graders in the Jonathan Alder Local School District. Parents can sign up starting Aug. 9. The limit is one backpack per student. Backpacks will be available while supplies last. For details, call (614) 873-0880.
