London Ribs & Jazz Fest set for Aug. 6

(by Kristy Zurbrick, Madison Editor - July 27, 2010)

The City of London and Downtown London Association are pulling out all the stops for a finger-licking, toe-tapping good time at the third annual London Ribs & Jazz Fest.

Set for 11 a.m. to 11 p.m. Aug. 6 in downtown London, the event will feature regionally and nationally renowned jazz acts, the vittles of half a dozen local “rib burners,” and several new features to entertain the crowd, which last year numbered 8,000, according to Downtown London member Steve Lelonek.

“We’ve outgrown our original space, so the festival area is four times the size it was before,” he said.

Music, food and activities will span Main Street between High and First streets and Second Street between Oak and Union. Café-style seating will line either side of Main to provide visitors with more convenient opportunities to enjoy the food, beer and music. Vendors and non-profit booths will lineup in the center of the street, leaving existing businesses accessible to the public.

The expansion will accommodate a larger children’s area, as well as a new feature—a car show on East Second Street. Registration runs from 4 to 6:30 p.m. followed by the show from 7 to 9. The entry fee is $10 per car. The first 50 entrants receive dash plaques. Trophies will go to the first-place finishers in each class, with plaques for second and third. The classes are: 1930-39, 1940-49, 1950-59, 1960-69, 1970-79, 1980-89, 1990-99, and 2000-present.

The Music
The festival’s schedule of live music is as follows:

11 a.m.-1 p.m.—The Crescent River Jazz Group puts its own kick into big band classics and contemporary dance hits and has played with the likes of Smoky Robinson, Frank Sinatra Jr. and Ray Charles. Their London performance will feature Dick Mackey, a featured vocalist with the Columbus and Cleveland jazz orchestras.

1:30-3:30 p.m.—The Linda Dachtyl Trio features multi-instrumentalist Larry Smith of Columbus, organ recording artist and Kenyon College jazz piano and percussion instructor Linda Dachtyl, and Percussive Arts Society Ohio chapter president and Kenyon College percussion instructor Cary Dachtyl.

4-6 p.m.—Jim Duff and the Necessities are a four-piece band that hails from Kentucky. Their music is melting pot of blues, soul, classic rock and traditional country.

6:30-8:30 p.m.—Soul Satyr is an eight-piece blues band whose CD, “No Slackin’,” represented the Columbus Blues Alliance at the Memphis Blues Challenge and finished in the top 12 for self-produced recordings.

9-11 p.m.—Mojo Theory, a blues group based in Hilliard, won the 2008 River City and 2009 Big Bend blues competitions and finished as a finalist at the 2009 and 2010 International Blues Challenges.

In addition to the City of London and Downtown London, sponsors of this year’s Ribs & Jazz Fest are Bobby Fisher Distributing, Coughlin Automotive Group, Huntington Bank, The Arbors of London and West Jefferson, Westwood Dairy Treat, Wilson Farm & Tool, and Wilson Printing & Graphics.
