Spin-a-Thon in CW fights cancer

Team Speranza, with support from Cyclist Connection, 200 Winchester-Cemetery Road in Canal Winchester, will be spinning for 24-hours starting July 30 at 5 p.m.

The event aims to raise money for the team's ride in Pelotonia 2010.

Team members will take turns spinning throughout the night and on July 31.

"Our hope is that we can bring people out to see what our team is all about and to raise funds for our ride in Pelotonia," said Andy Scheurer, a team "captain" along with Dustin Keith.

Both Scheurer and Keith plan to spin from 5 p.m.Friday to 5 p.m. Saturday.

"Part of our team philosophy is taking on physical challenges as a means to raise money and awareness for cancer research," Keith said. "In our own small way, we hope this spin-a-thon honors those who have and are currently battling cancer."

The members of Team Speranza range in age and athletic ability. The team, which was started this year by Keith and Scheurer has grown to 13 members riding in Pelotonia next month with another four members who regularly attend the team's training rides.

Team Speranza will have a number of fundraising events leading up to the second annual Pelotonia bicycle tour on Aug. 21-22. Prior to the Spin-a-Thon, team members will host friends and other guests at a wine tasting and private auction at House Wine in Worthington on Tuesday, July 27. The team is also selling raffle tickets for a Giant Defy road bike.

"We like to plan events where we can not only be social with our team members, friends, and family, but also appeal to those that want to help without having to ride a bike," Scheurer said.

The Spin-a-Thon will feature live music from local bands, live broadcasts with local news and radio stations, and food from Chipotle and Tim Horton's.

Team Speranza is a group of aspiring athletes and weekend warriors dedicated to using their athletic hobbies and a general team atmosphere to raise the awareness of, and funding for, various cancer research charities. Primarily located near Columbus, they strive to participate in local charitable sporting events that will have a direct impact within the Central Ohio community.

Many members members have previously participated in charitable sporting events such as the Susan G. Komen Race for the Cure, Nationwide better health Commit to be Fit series, Pelotonia 2009, and many more.

As of July 22, the team has raised over $15,000 for Pelotonia 2010 with a goal of raising $25,000 for the event. More information about the team can be found at http://www.teamsperanza.org.
