If you aren’t certified to administer cardiopulmonary resuscitation, would you be able to react like Maureen did?
Maureen Bosart has been Red Cross CPR certified for over 25 years. Annually, she receives training but had not used her skills until one dire situation. As she scanned a pool at a weekend retreat, a group of teenagers challenged each other in a competition of sorts. The winner was the individual who could stay underwater the longest. One by one, the boys popped out of the water, gasping for air until there was one clear winner. When they realized the boy was unconscious underwater, they carried him out of the pool and over to Bosart who instinctually went into rescue mode.
"Saving a life is second nature. It just comes to you," Bosart said.
She first checked for the teen’s heartbeat and pulse and then began mouth-to-mouth resuscitation. Within seconds, the boy was revived.
Bosart’s story is a sound reminder of why being certified in performing life-saving skills is imperative. The Red Cross provides not only CPR certification, but also lifeguard lessons, water orientation and learn-to-swim courses. Money donated to the Red Cross is vital to keeping these programs afloat.
