West Jeff to test air quality in Village Hall

(by Sandi Latimer, staff writer - July 20, 2010)

The air quality in the West Jefferson Village Hall will be checked after some employees complained about not feeling well.

Village Council passed a resolution at its July 19 meeting to hire Enviro Tech of Central Ohio, located in Reynoldsburg, to perform an indoor air quality test. Public Service Director Harold Walker said some current and former employees said the building was making them sick. He did not elaborate on their allegations or illnesses.

The resolution, brought by Councilman Cory Coburn, stipulates that Enviro Tech perform the work for less than $1,500. The test, Coburn said, will identify any and all hazardous materials in the building.

In other action:
• Council approved $11,000 for repairs and installation of flood lights at the basketball court at Converse Park.

• Council authorized Public Service Director Harold Walker to draw up specifications and seek quotes for a fence around the water treatment plant. Walker said he wants to install an eight-foot chain link fence with three strands of barbed wire on top for security.

• Council approved a proposal from the Ohio Department of Transportation to replace the bridge on County Road 14/Taylor-Blair Road over Little Darby Creek. This would be a project of Madison County and ODOT, but required West Jefferson’s approval because half of the bridge lies inside the village limits.

Work is expected to begin in the spring of 2011.

“It is in desperate need of repair,” Walker said. “There’s a metal plate over a hole in the bridge.”

Maintenance of the bridge would be up to Madison County but any features West Jefferson wishes to add would be the responsibility of the village.

• Council forwarded a petition to vacate the unpaved extension of Water Street to the Planning and Zoning Commission.

Anita Williams told council she wants to keep people out of the area between 72 E. Water St. and behind 74 E. Town St. She said people are using the area as a shortcut and are dumping trash there.

Council scheduled a public hearing on the matter. It will take place at 5:30 p.m. Sept. 7, prior to the regular council meeting.
