Book sale
The Harrisburg Library, 1036 High St., sponsors an ongoing book sale Monday through Thursday from 1:30 to 7 p.m. and Saturday from noon to 3 p.m. The library accepts donations of all books and movies but they ask you not send magazines. All items must be clean and in good condition. Proceeds benefit the Harrisburg Library Association.
Screenings at Evans
Amity Care Home Health Services provides a nurse at the E.L. Evans Senior Center in Grove City to do free diabetic screening and blood pressure testing every first and third Wednesday of the month from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. For more information, call Amity Care Home Health at 334-6800.
RecSchool registration
RecSchool is currently registering new families for the 2010-11 school year.
Operated by the Grove City Parks and Recreation Department and licensed by the state of Ohio, the RecSchool preschool program is designed to support the developmental needs of pre-kindergarten children who are three years of age and older.
The program operates September through May with half-day classes offered one, two or three days per week at Gantz Barn, 2259 Home Road, in Gantz Park. Morning classes meet 9-11:30 a.m.; afternoon classes meet 12:30-3 p.m. Participants must be three years old by Sept. 30, 2010.
The RecSchool philosophy recognizes that children learn best through meaningful play. Experienced teachers plan a curriculum that supports cognitive, physical and social development through art, literacy, music, math and science experiences. This environment prepares students for successful experiences in school and beyond by fostering competence, social skills, independence, creativity and a love of learning.

Prayer box at UMC
The Grove City United Methodist Church has installed a purple mailbox for anyone wishing to ask for prayers. A person can drive up with a written request or use a prayer card provided in the shelf above the prayer opening spot. Pencils are also available.
GCHS reunion

Grove City Preschool registering
The Grove City Preschool is now registering for the 2010/11 school year that begins in September. Classes are available for children who will be 3, 4 or 5 years old by Sept. 30. Parents can choose two or three half-day sessions. There is a $30 registration fee and forms are accepted on a first-come, first-serve basis. School supplies for Eagle Scout project
Matt Tolliver of Boy Scout Troop 136, Grove City, will be working on his Eagle Scout project during the month of July. His project is a school supply drive for the Tom Fennessy Back-to-School Project. Needed items include pencils, pens, highlighters, filler paper, spiral notebooks, washable markers, scissors, rulers, glue sticks, three-ring binders, erasers and more. Drop boxes will be placed at the Grove City Library, City Hall, Jackson Township Building, and Jackson Township Fire Stations through July 23. New display at Welcome Center
The Welcome Center Museum, 3378 Park St., has rotated four of its display cases to showcase military items for the upcoming Independence Day celebration. The display will remain until September.
Museum hours are Monday and Tuesday from 8:30 a.m. to 6:30 p.m. and Wednesday-Friday 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. The museum will open Saturdays from 9 a.m. to noon beginning July 10 during Farmers Market.
Some of the items on display include Civil War rifle and saber, World War II Japanese and American army helmets, military rifles from Japan and the United States, uniforms, flags including a Christian Church Pennant used in military services and Japanese currency to mention a few.
Visitors can also look for friends and relatives in a 1,175 page book titled "Young American Patriots." The book is a listing of names and photographs of World War II military veterans from Ohio. It is kept in the Grove City Area Visitors and Convention Bureau office and can be viewed on request.
Summer Scribbles Writing Contest
Seventh and eighth grade students are invited to enter the Summer Scribbles Writing Contest being held at Southwest Public Libraries. The contest, sponsored by the Grove City Writer's Group and Friends of the Library, is open to any incoming seventh and eighth grade student who lives within the boundaries of South-Western City Schools. Visit either the Grove City or Westland Library for rules and entry forms. Cash prizes will be awarded for first, second and third place winners in each of two categories: fiction and essay/poetry. Submissions are due by Aug. 2.
Adult fall sports
Grove City Parks and Recreation will register teams for adult fall softball, Wiffle(r)ball and cornhole from July 1 through July 30. Team registration may be completed in person from 8 a.m.-5 p.m. Monday through Friday at City Hall, 4035 Broadway, or by dropping off payment and a downloadable application and roster in the City's 24-hour drop box outside City Hall. FCBOH immunizations
The Franklin County Board of Health will offer child and adult immunizations at the Jackson Township Administration Building, 3756 Hoover Road, on July 22 from 9:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m and 1 to 3 p.m.
Required immunizations are available for a $10 fee per shot for children ages 1 month to 18 years of age. No one will be turned away due to inability to pay for childhood immunizations. The board of health is waiving the $15 assessment fee for childhood immunizations through Sept. 30 to help assure all children have the opportunity to be vaccinated.
Be sure to bring your child's shot record with you to the clinic. A completed consent form is required if a parent or legal guardian is not present at the clinic. Adult immunizations are available and vary in price according to the vaccine; and there is a $15 assessment fee.

Mud volleyball at Beulah
The 25th annual Mud Volleyball Tournament will be held July 31 at Beulah Park at 9 a.m. The event aims to raise funds for the Epilepsy Foundation of Central Ohio.
Mud volleyball organizers are looking for players, referees and volunteers. Teams of eight to 12 people can register online at www.epilepsy-ohio.org. The cost is $300 per team. Those wishing to volunteer or referee can do so at the same website. Volunteers and referees received lunch, beverages and a mud volleyball T-shirt. For details, call 358-0874.
The Epilepsy Foundation of Central Ohio is the only agency providing services free of charge specifically for people of all ages with epilepsy in central Ohio.
GCHS class of 1995 reunion
The Grove City High School class of 1995 will hold its 15-year reunion on Aug. 21 at Victory's, located at 543 S. High St. in German Village at 7 p.m. Appetizers, drink specials and live music will be provided. The cost is $15 per person pre sale/$20 per person at the door. Rabies vaccine at Evans
The Franklin County Board of Health and the Columbus Academy of Veterinary Medicine will hold a low-cost rabies immunization clinic on July 16 for dogs, cats and ferrets. The clinic will be held from 1 to 3 p.m. at Windsor Park, 4330 Dudley Ave., Grove City. The cost is $5 per shot, cash only and no appointment is necessary. All pets must be on a leash or in an animal carrier. Pets between 3 months and 1 year of age will receive a vaccine good for one year. Pets 1 year or older with a current rabies vaccination will receive a vaccine good for three years. Current rabies vaccination certificates and rabies tags must be presented at the time of vaccination in order for your pet to receive a three-year vaccination. All dogs, cats and ferrets in Franklin County are required to be vaccinated against rabies and are required to wear their rabies tag. Comedy at LTOB
The Little Theatre Off Broadway presents "Move Over Mrs. Markham," by Ray Cooney and John Roy Chapman.
Chaos and confusion ensue when several attempted romantic liaisons cross paths in the bedroom of a London publisher. Who will get there first: the publisher's partner and his latest conquest, the interior designer and the maid, the housewife and her wild fling? Who knows? Cooney and Chapman's British bedroom farce promises fast paced mayhem and plenty of laughter.
Performances run on Fridays and weekends from July 16 through Aug. 7. Tickets are $10; students, senior citizens pay $8.

Casting call at LTOB
The Little Theatre Off Broadway will hold open auditions for "Forever Plaid," by Stuart Ross.
"Forever Plaid" is an affectionate musical homage to the close-harmony 'guy groups' of the 1950s. This quartet of high-school chums, and their earnest dreams of recording an album, ended in death, when their '54 Mercury collided with a bus filled with Catholic schoolgirls on their way to see the Beatles' The Ed Sullivan Show debut. The girls were fine. As the Plaids tell the stories of their lives, they perform some of the greatest hits of the 1950s.
Auditions will take place at 7 p.m. July 19 and 20 at the theater, 3981 Broadway, Grove City. The script calls for four male singers. Please bring 16 prepared bars of vocal and instrumental music, acting resume and photograph if available.

Ride for shelties
The Central Ohio Sheltie Rescue group will host a charity bike run on Aug. 1 at the Rude Dog Bar and Grill, 8711 Sancus Blvd. in Columbus. The Rock n' Ride for Rescue will begin at 1:30 p.m. Tickets are $5 at the door or $10 ahead of time, which includes an entry into a grand prize drawing. Picnic with the Pups
The CHA Animal Shelter is gearing up for its annual Picnic with the Pups summer fundraiser and celebration. The event will be held on July 17 from 4 to 8:30 p.m. at the CHA Animal Shelter, located at 3765 Corporate Dr. in Columbus. Mud tourney in GC
The annual Grove City Mud Volleyball Tournament is back for its 21st year of mucky play. The event will be held from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Aug. 7 at Beulah Park, 3811 Southwest Blvd.
Teams of six can register for $150 per team at City Hall until Monday, Aug. 2. All team members must be 18 and older with a minimum of two women on each team. The tournament is single elimination; each team is guaranteed at least three matches. No coolers are permitted, and teams will not be re-admitted if they leave the courts.
All proceeds benefit LifeCare Alliance's Meals on Wheels program, which provides meals to local shut-ins. In 2009, this event raised $6,000 for the organization.

ACTS in Grove City
St John's Lutheran in conjunction with 12 other local churches will help organize the third annual ACTS day on Aug. 14 and 15. Volunteers from the local churches will be providing assistance to those in need in the community. Citizens fundraiser
Citizens for South-Western City Schools will host its first annual fundraiser from 7:30 to 11:00 p.m. on Aug. 13 at Oakhurst Country Club. The proceeds will help offset student participation fees for SWCS middle school and high school students.
The event, A Night at The Races, will feature video of thoroughbred horse races on two screens, an hors d'oeuvre buffet, cash bar and music. Tickets cost $35, and include admission to the event and food. Race tickets are $10, payable at the event, and include buy in for all eight races.

Zumbathon
The Grove City YMCA, 3600 Discovery Dr., will host a Zumbathon on July 16 from 6 to 8 p.m. The event is open to the public and will cost $5. Proceeds will benefit PHP.
Fundraiser for Violet
Violet Baier, 7, of Grove City has a brain tumor and her family will host a fundraiser for her on July 18 from 1 to 5 p.m. at Plank's on Broadway. There will be a bake sale, silent auction and poker run. Baier is a student at J.C. Summer. For additional information, contact Angie at 402-0964.
Skateboarding competition
The Grove City Friends of the Skate Park will hold a skateboarding competition on July 31 at the Grove City Skate Park, 3728 Hoover Road.
Registration begins at 10 a.m. and costs $10. The competition begins at 11 a.m. Participants will compete in one of four divisions: beginner, intermediate, advanced and expert. The street and bowl divisions will be judged by a panel of experienced skateboarders, and prizes will be awarded to the top three places in each division.
Skaters of all ages and skill levels are encouraged to participate. The event is expected to attract skaters from across Ohio. Proceeds will help pay for skate park maintenance and improvements as well as provide funds for future events.
The Grove City Skate Park will be closed to non-participants during the competition. In case of inclement weather, the event will be held Aug. 1 at the same time. Photography contest at Harrisburg Library
The Harrisburg Library will host a photography contest. Entries are due by July 26 at the library, 1036 High St. Entry fees are $1 per entry for adult classes, youth sections at no charge. There are two entries per class maximum. The classe include people, structures, nature scene, animals, special effects, agricultural scene, any black and white, any photo of Harrisburg or its vicinity. Rotary Cruise and Ride
The Rotary Club of Grove City will host the 13th annual Cruise and Ride in Grove City's Town Center. The car show is scheduled noon to 6 p.m. on Sept. 25. More than 250 classic cars and motorcycles are expected to register for the event. Early express registration is now available through www.grovecityrotary.org. The first 100 vehicles registered will receive dash plaques. Registration is noon to 2 p.m. the day of the show. There is a $15 registration fee per show vehicle. Parking is free to those attending the show. There is no admission fee. Proceeds will benefit the programs and activities of the Rotary Club of Grove City, including student scholarships, Relay for Life Survivors Dinner, Rotary Lake at Fryer Park, and other local and international projects.
Duck Dash
The Grove City Noon Lions Club will host its third annual Duck Dash and picnic on July 31 at Trapper John's Canoe Livery near Darbydale on the Big Darby Creek. The menu for the noon to 3 p.m. picnic is hot dogs, hamburgers, cheeseburgers, pasta salad, chips, soda and bottled water. The cost for the picnic is $5 per person. Harrisburg Homecoming
Harrisburg will be host its annual Homecoming July 29-31. Events will begin at 4 p.m. on the first day. The Cops-N-Kids event will take place on July 30, from noon to 3 p.m. at Harrisburg Elementary School.
