Illegal dumping becomes an issue in Pleasant Township

(by Dedra Cordle, staff writer - July 14, 2010)

The Franklin County Sheriff's Office and the Pleasant Township trustees are urging residents to keep their eyes open for illegal dumpers.

Within the past month, the Pleasant Township Road Department has had to come out to Gay Road four times to clean up after illegal dumpers.

"It's all construction debris," said township chairman Keith Goldhardt. "There's concrete, wood, bricks, gravel. It took a whole dump truck and a half to haul all that stuff away."

Goldhardt said one time, the illegal dumper or dumpers left their unwanted materials in the middle of Gay Road.

"If a car or truck would have hit that pile, it could have killed someone, easily."

Jeff Karn, the township's road supervisor, said the dumping has occurred at different hours of the day, but the last one took place after 11 p.m.

Trustee Nancy Hunter said if residents spot an illegal dumper, to call the sheriff's office at 462-3333. Residents can also report illegal dumpers by calling the Nail-A-Dumper Hotline at 871-5322 or filing a report at www.nailadumper.com. The hotline is open 24 hours a day, seven days a week.

According to the Ohio Department of Natural Resources, illegal dumpers can receive fines up to $500 and receive a sentence of 60 days in jail, depending on the severity of the crime.
