New park in Urbancrest
(by Dedra Cordle, staff writer - July 08, 2010)
Around this time next month, Urbancrest residents could be gathering for outdoor fun at a new location.
At the July 6 village of Urbancrest council meeting, Mayor Joseph Barnes Sr. announced that a new park will be going up in the area.
"It will be like a cookout park where people can grill and have family gatherings," he explained.
Barnes said it would be comparable to the Martin Luther King Jr. Park, which is located adjacent to the Vaughn E. Hairston Southwest Community Center YMCA.
The estimated five-acre Mayor's Park Pavilion will be located on Augustus Drive, near Bending Brook. The name of the park is in dedication to all of the former mayors of the village.
Barnes said that this park is being constructed with the help of ProLogis, one of the area businesses.
"They are getting all the materials to build it," he said.
Barnes added that there would be a shelter house, picnic tables, grills and even a fence line to separate the park from the railroad tracks.
Surveying of the land will start next week, and Barnes said, ideally, the Mayor's Park Pavilion would be in use by mid-August, if the weather permits.
