Bean Dinner to be bigger, better than ever
(by Whitney Wilson Coy, Westside Editor - June 10, 2010)
It’s that time of year again.
The Hilltop Bean Dinner will take place at Westgate Park on June 26.
Opening ceremonies will be performed on the main stage at 10 a.m. by VFW Post 4044.
Greater Hilltop Area Commissioner Justin Boggs will end the opening ceremonies on a musical note, with his rendition of the “Star Spangled Banner” played on the violin.
The West High Alumni Band will then take the stage until 11 a.m.
Greater Hilltop Area Commission Chair Chuck Patterson will serve as emcee for the day.
Activities throughout the park will also begin at 10 a.m.
According to HBA member Karen Whitman, this year’s Bean Dinner will be bigger and better than ever.
“We started with what we had last year, and added a little more of everything,” she said.
Food choices don’t end with the famous beans and hot dogs, served from the main shelter house. More food vendors than ever will set up at this year’s Bean Dinner.
If you’re hungry for beans, however, make sure to come early. The main shelter house will close at 4 p.m. this year, according to Whitman.
The children’s area also promises to expand from last year.
Hosted by Emmanuel Baptist Church, the children’s area will include inflatables, games, prizes, face painting, balloon animals and more.
Arts and crafts booths will surround the pond, with room for additional vendors still open.
According to Whitman, the cost to rent one 10 foot by 10 foot space is $50. Tents, tables and chairs are not provided.
Booths are also still available in the large business tent.
To reserve a space, contact Karen Whitman at 274-1275 or e-mail commesh@hotmail.com.
As always, music will rock the park most of the day. The Firebirds will take the stage from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m., followed by Mojo Theory from 2 to 7 p.m.
GHAC elections
Elections for the Greater Hilltop Area Commission will also take place at the Bean Dinner.
There are four open commission seats, each with a four-year term, beginning July 2010.
Voting will take place from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Voting locations will be at the Bean Dinner, the Hilltop Library and Hillcrest Baptist Church. Bring an ID to vote.
Results will be announced on the main stage at approximately 4 p.m.
For more information, contact Greg Large at 417-9137, or Linda Patterson at 795-8862.
Ohio Village Muffins
An all new feature has been added to this year’s Bean Dinner.
The Ohio Village Muffins will play against the Hilltop Bean Dinner team, composed of local players, at 2 p.m.
The Muffins play vintage baseball in the style of the 1800s. Rules for the game are very different from that baseball of today.
Some of the major differences in Muffins baseball includes a ball with a 10-inch circumference, as well as bats that can be any length, but no larger than 2.5 inches in diameter.
Also, gloves and other protective equipment are not worn, as they had yet to be invented in the mid 1800s.
The Muffins will play in vintage uniforms.
