Free senior luncheon

There will be a free senior luncheon program on Tuesday, May 11, at noon, at Westgate United Methodist Church, 61 S. Powell Ave. Open to the public. Donations accepted. 

 

Falcon signs at Ball State

Franklin Heights High School junior Aftyn Siemer has signed a national letter of intent to participate in varsity women’s gymnastics at Ball State University this fall. Siemer is a junior, but is graduating early. Siemer has trained as a gymnast since she was 8 years old. Her home gym for competition is Integrity Gymnastics, and she has also trained at Universal Gymnasts.  

Daughters’ Celebration Dinner

A Daughters’ Celebration Dinner will be held at Parkview United Methodist Church, 344 S. Algonquin Ave., on May 7.  Pre-dinner festivities will begin at 5:30 p.m. and dinner will be served at 6 p.m.  The menu will be lasagna, salad, dessert, and beverage. The cost is $9 for adults and $5 for children. Reservations need to made by May 4, 9 p.m., to 274-8431 or 875-0393. 

 

BRHS summer athletic camps

Bishop Ready High School will be holding a number of summer athletic camps, each designed for a particular age group.  A complete list of camps and the forms needed to apply, as well as general information and cost for each camp, is available on the Bishop Ready website, brhs.org (then use the drop down menu under “Athletics” for Summer Camps).

The camps are open to non-Bishop Ready students. Camp size is limited so anyone interested in attending any of the BRHS summer camps is encouraged to register early. Most camps begin in June.

Boys open Gym

Boys ages 13 - 15 are invited to open gym for basketball on Mondays from 6-7:15 p.m. at the Holton Recreation Center, 303 N. Eureka Ave.

Boys ages 10 - 12 will have the gym on Wednesdays, at the same time.  

There is no fee. Holton Recreation Center is now operated by The Brian Muha Memorial Foundation, Inc. 

 

Mother’s Day breakfast

Abundant Life Tabernacle, 35 Derrer Road, is having a Mother’s Day breakfast and service.  On Sunday, May 9, a free breakfast will be served from 9 - 10 a.m. and service will begin at 10:30 am. 

Blockwatches to discuss redistricting progress

The Camp Chase and Great Western blockwatches will have a combined meeting on May 11, at 7 p.m. at Hoge Memorial Church, 2930 West Broad St. There will be snacks and door prizes. Special Speakers include Deputy Chief Jacobs and president of the FOP, Sgt. Jim Gilbert. They will let us know the progress of the redistricting plans and what changes we can expect. You will have the opportunity to talk directly with police about problems in your area. Time will be limited so be prepared to be brief and have details ready. Other blockwatches are welcome to join. Fire hydrant flushing

The Franklin Township Fire Department wil be flushing hydrants in the township and Valleyview from April 26 through May 20. Flushing will be done Monday through Thursday, 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. 

 

Ooze and Gooze

Are you ready to get messy?  Abundant Life Tabernacle, 35 Derrer Road, is having an Ooze and Gooze family activity on Saturday, May 8, at 10 a.m.  This activity will be full of messy fun with games and competitions for your family. Concert at Central Baptist

The Central Baptist Church, 1955 Frank Road, will host a concert featuring Bill Murk, a Christian violinist. The event will take place May 9 during the 6 p.m. service. For more information, contact the church at 279-3115. 

 

Bishop Ready class of 1970

Bishop Ready’s class of 1970 will hold a  40 year reunion on June 12, from 7-11 p.m. at Salvi’s Bistro in Hilliard. Cost is $20 per person for appetizers, a live band and a cash bar. Contact Tom Reid at treidohio@yahoo.com  or Liz Pizzurro at 272-2062.  

 

West High School class of 1980

The West High School class of 1980 Will hold their reunion on Saturday, June 26, at 6 p.m. at The Old Spaghetti Warehouse on West Broad Street.

There will be an open menu and bar. Everyone will be responsible for their own bill.

Free community meal

St. James Lutheran Church, 5660 Trabue Road, serves a free community meal each Tuesday, from 4:30-6:30 p.m. All are welcome to attend. 

 

WHS Performing Arts reunion

The Westland High School Performing Arts, 88-92 reunion planning committee is looking for alumni who particpated in band (marching, symphonic or concert), choir groups (chorale, symphonic, concert and men’s/women’s ensembles), and theater groups (fall and spring productions or clubs) for a reunion picnic this summer.  The reunion will be held on July 10 at Hilliard Homestead Park.

Free clothing and lunch

New Hope Church, 3060 W. Broad St., will provide free women’s men’s and children’s clothing May 15, from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Free lunch will be provided. All are welcome. This is a monthly event. 

 

Celebrate Recovery

Do you or someone you know suffer from the addiction to alcohol, drugs, gambling, sex, eating or any other addictions which makes your or their life unmanageable? There is a solution. Music, Message and Meal

There will be a free hot meal served at Hoge Memorial Presbyterian Church, 2930 W. Broad St., on the second and fourth Saturday of each month from 6-7 p.m. as a part of Hoge’s HM3 (Music, Message and Meal) program. All are welcome to attend. American Legion Post 799

American Legion Post 799 holds their monthly meetings on the second Thursday of each month at 7:30 p.m. at the Prairie Township Fire Station, 123 Inah Ave. Anyone interested in joining the legion should attend. Westland Area Commission

Westland Area Commission meets the third Wednesday of each month at 7 p.m. at Doctors Hospital, 5100 W. Broad St. The commission covers the area bounded on the north by the Conrail tracks, on the west by the Hellbranch Run, on the south by Big Run and on the east by I-270. Friends hosts senior group

Senior citizens are invited to a seniors group at Friends Worship Center, 3030 Clime Road, on the first Thursday of each month from 12-2:30 p.m. The event will feature a light lunch, games and fellowship. PTSC exercise programs

The Prairie Township Senior Center hosts the following exercise programs that are free and open to the public:

•Mondays - 10:30 a.m., aerobics; 2 p.m., line dance

•Tuesdays - 10 a.m., gentle stretchers

•Wednesdays - 10:30 a.m., body conditioning

•Fridays - 10 a.m., gentle stretchers

Free meals offered

The Church of the Lamb of God, 2216 Sullivant Ave., offers free meals on the fourth Saturday of each month.  

 

Awana Clubs

Awana Clubs for boys and girls, from three-years-old to sixth grade, will be held Wednesdays, from 6:45 to 8:15 p.m. at Briggs Road Baptist Church, 3231 Briggs Road. Call 272-7430 for more information. 


Golden Age Center

The Salvation Army Golden Age Center, 2300 W. Mound St., invites anyone aged 60 or over to attend on Tuesdays and Thursdays, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., for lunch, crafts, movies, BINGO, games, health and fitness, and fun. Call Ellen Marvin, senior director, at 274-7600, ext. 108, one day in advance to reserve lunch for $1.25 per day. Fee for expenses is $9 per month. 


VFW Post 6065

VFW Post 6065 will hold their meetings on the third Thursday of each month at 10 a.m. Meetings last about one hour and are held at the Prairie Township Senior Center, 4616 West Broad St. Those interested in getting involved or volunteering time should attend a meeting. The Ladies Auxiliary meets at 6:30 p.m. The motivations of the VFW are patriotic, historical, and educational. They strive to perpetuate the memory and history of their dead, and to assist their widows and orphans. Call Will Davis at 309-0171 for further information. 

 

Exercise for seniors

Seniors are invited to exercise on Tuesday and Thursday mornings from 9:30 a.m. to 10:30 a.m. at St. Paul Lutheran Church, 55 Pasadena Ave. Men and women aged 50 to 90 and up have exercised at the facility since 2001. The instructor leads each session with warm-ups, play balls, resistance bands, hand weights, some low-impact aerobics and balance activities. Each participant can adapt the routine to his/her comfort level. The cost is $35 for each eight-week session. Call the instructor, Lori Vazquez, at 989-4595 with questions. 


Paper recycling at Parkview

Parkview United Methodist Church, 344  S. Algonquin Ave., is providing the community with recycling bins for paper products. Bring newspapers, magazines, junk mail, etc., to the green and yellow bins in the church parking lot. No cardboard or phone books will be accepted. Questions, call 875-7231.
