State applauds fair board
Ohio Agriculture Director Robert Boggs presents Madison County Senior Fair Board member Dennis Long with a certificate of recognition for his outstanding contributions to the success of the Madison County Fair. The presentation took place in January at the Ohio Fair Managers Association convention in Columbus.
“It is only through the hard work of the local volunteers that Ohio’s agricultural fair tradition is carried forward,” Boggs said.
Long also accepted a certificate of recognition on behalf of the fair board for completion of a successful 2009 fair season.

Swonger up for school awards
Don Swonger, a board member of the Madison-Plains Local and Tolles Career and Technical Center school boards, will receive the Ohio School Boards Association’s (OSBA) Award of Achievement and Master Board Member award at a regional conference in Columbus on March 17.
The achievement award goes to school board members for their commitment to training and leadership activities on their boards of education and through region and statewide OSBA activities.
The master board member award goes to school board members who dedicate themselves to improving their boardmanship skills and knowledge. All master board members must first earn the achievement award. The master honor is only awarded once to an individual and is recognized for life.

Chamber exec recognized
Sean K. Hughes of the Madison County Chamber of Commerce was selected as the 2009 Chamber of Commerce Executives of Ohio (CCEO) Michael A. Schultz Professional of the Year for chambers with less than 500 members.
This is the CCEO’s highest award of distinction. Recipients are chamber chief executives whose performance and commitment to the industry and their local communities is exceptional.
Hughes has served Madison County since 2006.

Governor taps London man
Gov. Ted Strickland recently appointed George Byers of London to the Motor Vehicles Dealers Board.
The board implements and enforces rules and regulations necessary to conduct hearings on the issuance, suspension or revocation of motor vehicle dealer licenses. Additionally, the board hears appeals on refusal to issue licenses for dealers and/or salesmen.
Byers is chairman of the board of Geo Byers and Sons. He also serves as a member of the Columbus Foundation and the Columbus Sports Corporation. Byers founded the Byers Foundation to benefit the United Way, Children’s Hospital, Mid Ohio Food Bank and several animal shelters. He received a bachelor’s degree from Ohio University.

Gorman named scholar
Earlham College named Chelsea Gorman, a senior and daughter of Ruth and John Gorman of London, a Bonner Scholar.
The Bonner Scholars Program is a four-year developmental leadership program rooted in community service. Supported by the Bonner Foundation in Princeton, N.J., the Bonner Scholarship provides tuition and summer support for 15 Earlham students per class year who demonstrate a commitment to community service. Each semester Bonner Scholars are required to complete a minimum of 140 hours of service, or about 10 hours per week. A summer of service consists of at least 280 hours of service spread out during at least seven weeks.

Dhume named first vice president
Madison County Commissioner David Dhume has been installed as first vice president of the County Commissioners Association of Ohio (CCAO) for 2010. State Auditor Mary Taylor participated in the installation ceremony held in association with the County Engineers Association of Ohio.
CCAO represents Ohio’s 87 Boards of County Commissioners and the Summit County Executive and Council.
CCAO promotes best practices in county government administration and management; advocates on behalf of counties at the state and federal levels; provides training and technical assistance programs; and provides cost saving service programs for Ohio counties. Dhume served as second vice president in 2009.
