West Jeff Library hosts prom dress giveaway

(by Kristy Zurbrick, Madison Editor - March 08, 2010)

Hurt-Battelle Memorial Library in West Jefferson is offering an alternative to prom shopping at the malls.

On March 20, the library will host “Prom Promenade,” a giveaway featuring gently used prom dresses and men’s suits. The event will run from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. and is restricted to West Jefferson High School juniors and seniors with student IDs.

“We put a notice out to the public that we are accepting gently used, dry-cleaned formal wear, and the community has been very generous,” said Lisa Scheiderer, the library’s Webmaster and prom event organizer. “We already have 14 or 15 dresses and are hoping to get more. We also know we have some suits coming, too.”

The dresses and suits will be given away on a first come, first served basis. Each participant will receive a number to establish the selection order. The person who plans to wear the dress must be the person present to pick it out.

Organizers will set the mood by wearing formal wear themselves and decorating the library in West Jefferson High School’s 2010 prom theme, “Arabian Nights.” They will serve punch and cookies and encourage visitors to sign up for more giveaways.

Area merchants have donated gift certificates for restaurants, haircuts and styles, manicures, discounted limousine rentals, and free boutonnieres and corsages. Students can enter as many times as they like between now and the drawing date on April 2. Each person can win no more than one prize.

West Jefferson’s prom is set for April 24 at the Raymond Memorial Golf Course in Columbus.

The library is located at 270 Lilly Chapel Road. Hours are 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. Monday through Friday and 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday. To donate dresses or suits or for more information, call (614) 879-8448.
