Dedra predicts Oscar winners

(by Dedra Cordle, staff writer - March 02, 2010)

At 8 p.m. March 7, ABC will air the 82nd annual Academy Awards ceremony.

Because my Oscar predictions rocked the past three years, I’m going for the elusive platinum medal, despite not seeing all of the nominated movies. In case I come up lame, my excuse is lack of preparation.

Best Supporting Actor Nominees
Matt Damon—“Invictus”
Woody Harrelson—“The Messenger”
Christopher Plummer—“The Last Station”
Stanley Tucci—“The Lovely Bones”
Christoph Waltz—“Inglourious Basterds”

Prediction: Awards season began back when it was warm out (not that we Ohioans remember what that feels like), and Christoph Waltz has won practically every award for which he has been nominated. While terrific dialogue, visionary goodness and hot men (Hello, Brad Pitt, Michael Fassbender and Daniel Bruhl!) fill the movie, it’s hard to take your eyes off Waltz’s charmingly terrifying SS Colonel Hans Landa. Waltz plays the part to perfection, which is why I think the first-time nominee will take home the statuette.

Best Actor in a Leading Role Nominees
Jeff Bridges—“Crazy Heart‚
George Clooney—“Up In The Air”
Colin Firth—“A Single Man”
Morgan Freeman—“Invictus”
Jeremy Renner—“The Hurt Locker”

Prediction: Picking a winner for this category makes my heart ache. I have a soft spot for each of the performances, but I’m going with the underrated Jeff Bridges, whose weary country singer, Bad Blake, made me not want to hurl whenever I hear country music.

Best Supporting Actress Nominees
Penelope Cruz—“Nine”
Vera Farmiga—“Up In The Air”
Maggie Gyllenhaal—“Crazy Heart”
Anna Kendrick—“Up In The Air”
Mo’Nique—“Precious”

Prediction: As much as I’m pulling for either one of the “Up In The Air” ladies, it’s pretty much a given that comedian Mo’Nique will win for her portrayal as Mary Jones, the emotionally and physically abusive New York City mother.

Best Actress in a Leading Role Nominees
Sandra Bullock—“The Blind Side”
Helen Mirren—“The Last Station”
Carey Mulligan—“An Education”
Gabourey Sidibe—“Precious”
Meryl Streep—“Julie & Julia”

Prediction: This seems to be a two-way race between Meryl Streep and Sandra Bullock. Streep was terrific as American chef, author and television personality Julia Child, and Bullock was, well, I didn’t see “The Blind Side,” but I like her personality. I’ll flip a coin; heads Streep wins, tails Bullock does. According to Abraham Lincoln, Sandra Bullock wins this category.

Best Director Nominees
Kathryn Bigelow—“The Hurt Locker”
James Cameron—“Avatar”
Lee Daniels—“Precious”
Jason Reitman—“Up In The Air”
Quentin Tarantino—“Inglourious Basterds”

Prediction: I am going with Girl Power on this one and predict that Kathryn Bigelow will become the first woman to win best director.

Best Picture Nominees
“A Serious Man”
“An Education”
“Avatar”
“The Blind Side”
“District 9”
“The Hurt Locker”
“Inglourious Basterds”
“Precious”
“Up”
“Up In The Air”

Prediction: I could see “Inglourious Basterds” sneaking in there after a vote-splitting fight between “The Hurt Locker” and “Avatar,” but you just can’t beat the blue-skinned warriors of Pandora.
