City groups show support for Center of Learning

The Grove City Area Chamber of Commerce and the Grove City Planning Commission have expressed support for the city's effort to secure the Center of Learning in Grove City.

The Center of Learning is a partnership of colleges and universities that will provide a broad base of educational opportunities not now available through a single institution in central Ohio. The partnership includes: Ashland University, Columbus State Community College, Mount Vernon Nazarene University, Ohio State University Extension, Otterbein College, Capital University, University of Toledo and the South-Western City Schools ABLE program.

Through articulation agreements the colleges and universities will recognize each other's courses providing an educational path from pre-college, to associate and bachelor's degrees through to completion of graduate degree programs. The partners would realize further efficiency by sharing classrooms, academic administration, staff and equipment. Local classes in Grove City would provide a sense of safety and ease of travel.

The Chamber of Commerce expressed support through a resolution passed by its board of directors at the Feb. 23 board meeting. The resolution further indicated interest to have the Center of Learning located preferably in the Grove City Town Center.

"The additional employees, adult students and added activity the partnership would generate in our Town Center is something we can not take a chance of losing," said Jeff Guminey, president of the chamber of commerce.

That same day, the Grove City Planning Commission provided unanimous endorsement of the Center of Learning. Marvin Holt, board chair of the Grove City Planning Commission said, "The Center of Learning creatively supports the continued effort to revitalize Grove City's Town Center."

"It is extremely rewarding that we have business and community support for our efforts to bring the Center of Learning to Grove City," said Mayor "Ike" Stage. "Various studies provided early support for the effort and cited significant Town Center merchant and shopper interest in a community college located in the Town Center. The development of the partnership is due, in part, to the commitment and enthusiasm of Columbus State Community College."
