The Madison County Historical Society has partnered with the Smithsonian Institution to bring “Between Fences,” a national traveling exhibition, to London March 5-April 5.

Exhibit hours are 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Tuesday through Sunday (closed on Monday). Admission is free. The historical society museum is located at 260 E. High St., London.

The exhibit focuses on all parts of the United States and illustrates how fences are a dominant part of the American landscape.

The exhibit allows participants to explore the history and meaning of fences and boundaries as they pertain to political, industrial and daily life.

“We encourage people of all ages to take advantage of this,” said Pat Van Horn, Historical Society treasurer.

In addition to the artifacts and information included in the Smithsonian’s set-up, the exhibit will feature a bit of local flair. Madison County residents from school students to senior citizens hand-painted more than 200 fence pickets, which will be on display. Entries from a fence-themed photography and art contest also will be available for viewing.

A $2,000 grant from the Ohio Humanities Council, a state affiliate of the National Endowment for the Humanities, is being used to facilitate the exhibit. London volunteer Denise Worthington wrote the grant application.

For details about the exhibit, call the Madison County Historical Society Museum at (740) 852-2977.
