Southeastern FFA chapter takes stock of success

Newly inducted FFA members show off their green hands after receiving their Greenhand FFA Degrees at an October meeting.

Southeastern High School’s 51-member FFA chapter is active year-round. Just since school started this year, the group has been busy, focusing first on rural and urban soils evaluation.

At the county level, the rural team placed third and the urban team placed fourth. Both competed at the district level, where the rural team placed third and the urban team placed 10th. Rural team members at district were Zach Grove, Zach McGraw, Reed Florence and Eli Lloyd. Urban team members were Ryan Miller, Andrew Armstrong, Brittany Wical and Brock Moore. The rural team advanced to state competition and included Zach Grove, Zach McGraw, Zach Battin and Charlie Litteral.

Eighteen first-year Southeastern FFA members earned their Greenhand Degree in October: Zach Battin, Ashley Coleman, Patricia Conley, Brooke Crum, Sheridan Dillow, Danielle Lefevers, Kristi Levernier, Eli Lloyd, Nicci McFann, Brock Moore, Steven Patrick, Mitchel Shawhan, Samantha Shuler, Michael South, Caleb Thomas, Heather Webster, Brittany Wical and Max Wildman.

The Ag Boosters sponsored a pork loin dinner for the home football game against Cedarville and served over 100 meals. Proceeds went to the scholarship program that awards $500 to two outstanding FFA seniors.

October also marked the start of FFA fruit sales, parliamentary procedure and food science competitions. Southeastern placed fifth in the district parliamentary procedure competition, after placing second at county and second at sub-district. This is the sixth straight year the team has competed at district. This year’s team members were; Chris Finchum, Joey Cooke, Andrew Armstrong, Matthew Cheney, Mackenzie Wright, Kara Pearl, Tyler Gregory, Zach Battin, Spencer Wright, Tyler Carper, Sheridan Dillow and Kristi Lever-nier. Heath-er Webster and Brock Moore also assisted the team.

The chapter sold cit-rus, apples, scented candles, barbeque sauce, nuts and calendars. The top three sellers were Kristi Levernier, Zach Grove and Michael Smith respectively. In all, the chapter raised over $14,000 in fruit sales. The money goes to FFA activities, trips and competitions.

In November, students competed in the food science and technology competition, where students evaluate aromas, food flavors and food safety, as well as test their general knowledge of food safety and preparation. The team placed fifth at sub-district: Chris Finchum, Charlie Litteral, Zach McGraw, Samantha Shuler, Max Wildman and Patricia Conley.

Several FFA members represented Southeastern at the 82nd National FFA Convention in Indianapolis. Members went to the Bluegrass Bull Bash Rodeo at the Indiana State Fairgrounds and spent time taking in the sights and attractions of downtown Indianapolis. The convention featured a large career show where students learned more about the agriculture industry and researched college education opportunities. Those who attended were: Kellie Buchanan, Chris Finchum, Mackenzie Wright and Tyler Gregory. The FFA thanks Charmelle Wright and Mary Buchanan for accompanying the members on the trip.

After Christmas break, it was time to start completing officer and record books for FFA awards. This year, FFA officers Tyler Gregory, Megan Cooke and Michael Smith completed the secretary, treasurer and reporter books, respectively. The secretary and treasurer books received gold ratings, while the reporter’s book received an honorable mention. Gregory and Cooke will be recognized at the state FFA convention in May.

Southeastern’s public speakers had a good start at the county competition this year. Brock Moore placed fifth in the FFA Creed. Andrew Armstrong, Matthew Cheney and Chris Finchum competed in extemporaneous speaking. Armstrong placed second to advance to the sub-district level. Moore also advanced.

To start FFA Week, the Ag Boosters sponsored a lock-in for Southeastern FFA members. The students spent some time getting to know each other better, playing games, watching movies, and competing in tournaments for basketball, volleyball and cornhole. Charmelle Wright and Mary Buchanan supervised the event.

The chapter’s schedule includes more competitions, the 82nd Ohio FFA Convention, FFA Camp and the Clark County Fair.
