The Madison Township Fire Department honored township residents Mike and Kelly Linek for their heroic actions on Feb. 1 when the couple removed two children from a burning house on Noe-Bixby Road.
The Lineks were presented with certificates at the Feb. 17 Madison Township trustee meeting and the ceremony was attended by Interim State Fire Marshal Don Cooper.
Mrs. Linek is a bus driver for the Groveport Madison School District and was on her way home with her husband during a break when they passed the burning home. They saw a five-year-old boy standing in the front door as smoke billowed out. The couple stopped and as Mrs. Linek called 911, Mr. Linek ran to the front door to pull the child from the house.
"When something like this happens, you don't think twice about what you're going to do, you just do it," said Mrs. Linek. "He (Mr. Linek) went into the house and removed a two-year-old. The smoke was so thick he could barely see the girl."
"The mother was trying to put the fire out and didn't want to leave, but I kept yelling at her to get out," said Mr. Linek. "From the time we pulled in until she came out and the fire department arrived was only five minutes, but it felt like forever. Our kids came home from school and said to us 'you guys were heroes,' but I don't think of myself as a hero. It's just something you do."
Cooper said were it not for the Lineks' quick actions, the outcome could have resulted in a loss of life.
