West Jeff senior center hosts free food program for elderly

(Posted Feb. 17, 2010)

The Jeffersonian Senior Center will act as the local administrator and distribution point for a federal USDA food and nutrition program serving low-income, elderly people in Madison County.

The Commodity Supplemental Food Program is a cooperative effort of the Ohio Department of Job and Family Services, Mid-Ohio FoodBank and Jeffersonian Senior Center.

Individuals must be age 60 or older, live in Madison County and meet income guidelines to be eligible for a monthly distribution of groceries. Each month, boxes of food are packed at Mid-Ohio FoodBank in Columbus and shipped to the senior center in West Jefferson. Clients pick up boxes on a designated day, or they can send a pre-determined, authorized person.

Typical contents of the grocery box, which weighs 30 to 35 pounds, include: cereal, fruit juice, canned meat or fish, peanut butter or beans, canned fruit, canned vegetables, rice or potatoes, and American cheese.

The food is shelf stable, nutritious and intended as an aid in supplementing regular household food supplies.

Seniors must apply for the program. There are a limited number of openings. Applications are being accepted at the Jeffersonian Senior Center.

Two enrollment days are designated to launch the program in March: 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on March 1 and 9 to 11 a.m. on March 3.

Proof of age and residence is required to satisfy eligibility. Information regarding the income guidelines or application procedure is available by calling Virginia Miller, president, at (614) 302-8883, or Ada Cochran, treasurer, at (614) 879-7979.

The Jeffersonian Senior Center is located at 28 E. Main St., West Jefferson, OH 43162 (behind the West Jefferson Water Department).
