Connie Ballah, Trinity United Methodist Church’s mission committee chairperson, and her granddaughter, Kaci Daily, inspect and place health kits in bags prior to final boxing. The kits are being sent to Haiti earthquake victims.

The United Methodist Committee on Relief (UMCOR) has asked United Methodists to provide health kits that can be sent to earthquake-devastated Haiti. Trinity United Methodist Church in Lilly Chapel recently assembled 60 such kits.

Pastor Rick Jones will take the kits to one of two United Methodist churches in the district where they will be transported by truck to UMCOR distribution centers, then to Haiti.

“We can get 60 kits on the way, and we can...assemble more kits after this ship-ment. The need in Haiti will continue long after the initial shipments arrive,” said Connie Ballah. mission committee chair.

In addition to sending health kits, Ballah announced plans for a “United Hearts for Haiti” fund-raiser to take place at Ann and Tony’s Restaurant in West Jefferson from 5 to 8 p.m. Feb. 21.

The Lilly Chapel, West Jefferson and London United Methodist churches will unite to put on a spaghetti dinner and silent auction at the restaurant.

“We’re excited. I think this will be the beginning of something big. There’s no reason why we can’t do a lot of things together,” Ballah said.

Tickets for the meal are $10 and can be purchased at the door or in advance by contacting one of the churches. The dine-in or carryout meal includes spaghetti, salad, drink and dessert.
