Reynoldsburg, Truro Township to build community garden

Reynoldsburg City Council adopted legislation Tuesday that would permit the city to enter into an agreement with Truro Township to build a community garden.
The garden will be located at 6305 E. Livingston Ave. and will include 16 plots, said Jason Shamblin, Parks and Recreation director. There is room to expand if the project is a success.
The plots can be purchased from the Parks and Recreation Department for a $30 fee and should be available for purchase beginning April 1, he said.
Councilwoman Leslie Kelly said a community garden committee is being formed to help coordinate classes and information for participants.
One of the goals will be to have mentors available to help the novices, Shamblin said.
Although the details are still being worked out, there also may be an opportunity for collaboration between the garden participants and the farmer's market, and even for students to utilize the garden as part of their schooling, he said.
Several organizations volunteered in putting the process together, including the Girl Scouts, the East Livingston Baptist Church, Truro Township and Sustainable Reynoldsburg.
The Ohio State University (OSU) Extension program also may become involved, although those details are still being worked out, Shamblin said.

* Council also adopted legislation permitting the city to enter into a contract with New World Systems (NWS) to purchase software and hardware to be used by the city's auditor's office, human resources and water departments.
Council approved the issuance and sale of $475,000 in bonds to pay for the costs of acquiring and installing the new system.
* Council appropriated the existing funds in the Police Special Revenue Funds to be spent as needed.
Police Special Revenue Funds are highly regulated and are only authorized to be spent on items specified under those regulations. Police Chief David Suciu assured council that he has and will continue to spend those funds responsibly.
* City Auditor Richard Harris announced that the City of Reynoldsburg had won its fourth "Making Your Tax Dollars Accountable" Award from Auditor of State Mary Taylor.
