Army Sgt. Phillip Clumm was announced at midfield during high school football’s biggest contest - the U.S. Army sponsored All-American Bowl.
Clumm was honored as a soldier-hero, one of more than 90 throughout the Army who had been awarded either the Silver Star, Bronze Star or Purple Heart during deployments to Iraq or Afghanistan.
“I was selected for this honor because I am a recipient of the Purple Heart,” said Clumm, a 1994 graduate of West High School.
Clumm says he believes that not only players, but young people overall, can benefit from serving their country, whether in the military or in projects close to where they live. “I think for me, the Army has made me a better person. I was going in a direction that would not have been good for me. Once I joined the Army, it showed me that I could do so much more,” said Clumm.
Today, Clumm is a micro wave systems maintainer/operator with the 193rd Brigade Support Battalion at Fort Leonard Wood, Mo. He has been in the military for almost eight years and has been deployed to Bosnia and Afghanistan.
