Business goings-on in West Jefferson
(by Kristy Zurbrick, Madison Editor - January 19, 2010)
West Jefferson resident Ralph Jones is thinking about renting space on Main Street to open a doughnut shop. He attended the West Jefferson village council meeting on Jan. 18 to find out what he needs to do to open a new business in town.
Council President Darlene Steele said he should start with the Planning and Zoning Commission, which meets the first and third Wednesdays of the month at 7 p.m. in council chambers at town hall.
Steele also suggested that Jones consider taking a space in the Gateway Shoppes of West Jefferson, a small-business incubator in the Main Street storefront once occupied by Cheri’s Art Studio.
Jones was aware of the incubator but wasn’t sure the spaces would be big enough and properly outfitted for a baking operation. Councilman Cory Coburn said double-size spaces, including at least one with ventilation, are available. He also suggested that Jones talk to Todd Stage of Stage Properties about the availability of the dairy queen building next to the village swimming pool. Coburn said a party that previously expressed interest in opening a dairy queen and doughnut shop in the space has since dropped out.
In other business news, Councilman Jim King reported that an appliance store is slated to open Feb. 1 at Walnut and Main streets in the space once occupied by Jefferson Savings. He also said the Subway restaurant in town might add ice cream to its offerings, and a Red Box movie rental kiosk is a possibility for West Jefferson. Additionally, Jeff and Dawn Lowe, owners of D’Liteful Designs, will celebrate their business expansion with an open house from 9 to 5:30 p.m. Jan. 25 at 24 W. Main St.
