CW and Madison Twp. could partner for development

(by Linda Dillman, staff writer - January 14, 2010)

Madison Township and Canal Winchester could team up for economic development.

At a work session Jan. 13, Canal Winchester Development Director Chris Strayer updated the Madison Township trustees on a potential Cooperative Economic Development Agreement (CEDA) between the township and village.

The 800-acre area is bordered on the south of U.S. 33, west of the village's corporation limits, north of Groveport Road, and east of Ebright Road. Canal Winchester is engaged in a similar agreement with Violet Township in the Diley Road area.

Strayer said Violet Township covers the cost of regular street maintenance and partners with the village on major road projects.

Annexation into a CEDA is petitioner-driven and typically not for residential development.

Madison Township Trustee Victor Paini said one of the advantages to partnering with the village is their tax rate.

"Violet Township is finding out it is a win-win situation and they're making money," reported Flowers.

Strayer said the proposed Bixby Road/U.S. 33 interchange is essential and a driving force in new development and extension of Winchester Boulevard. As for the railroad servicing the area, the development director said they want to utilize it as much as possible in attracting new industrial development.
