Book sale
The Harrisburg Library, 1036 High St., sponsors an ongoing book sale Monday through Thursday from 1:30 to 7 p.m. and Saturday from noon to 3 p.m.
Some books sell for $5 a bag, others range from $10 cents to $1. The library accepts donations of all books and movies but they ask you not send magazines. All items must be clean and in good condition.
All proceeds benefit the Harrisburg Library Association. Donations are tax deductible.
Screenings at Evans
Amity Care Home Health Services provides a nurse at the E.L. Evans Senior Center in Grove City to do free diabetic screening and blood pressure testing every first and third Wednesday of the month from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. For more information, call Amity Care Home Health at 334-6800.
Newspapers for dogs
The Franklin County Dog Shelter is asking for help from the community. The shelter is running very low on newspaper.
The shelter uses approximately a pallet load of newspapers each day to line the dog cages. It relies on donations of recycled newspaper from groups and individuals, as well as any surplus newspapers from daily and suburban newspapers whenever they are available.
The shelter needs full-size papers only, no tabloids or ad circulars, please. If you have surplus newspapers or recycled newspapers you can donate, please take them to the shelter located at 1731 Alum Creek Dr. You can drop them at the backdoor during business hours. After hours please deposit newspapers in the bins located behind the shelter, they are accessible 24-hours daily.
Military prayer service

Fencing in the city
The Grove City Parks and Recreation Department will offer a beginning fencing class for children ages six to 10 beginning Jan. 22.
This six-week class will be taught by fencing specialist Sergey Danilov on Friday afternoons from 3:30 to 4:30 p.m. at the Park Annex, 4034 1/2 Broadway. All fencing equipment will be provided, and the cost is $90 ($95 for non-residents).
Often called "physical chess," sword fighting combines a great mental workout with physical fitness. Pre-registration is required for all youth classes.

Dark comedy at LTOB
The Little Theatre Off Broadway will present "Incorruptible" by Michael Hollinger.
"Incorruptible" is a dark comedy set in 1,250 A.D. France. Priseaux Abbey is in a jam. Someone has stolen the bones of beloved St. Foy, and the brothers face starvation. Things begin to look up when Brother Martin hits upon an idea save the monastery. Mayhem sets in when the Pope decides to pay a visit.
Performances run on Fridays and weekends from Jan. 15 through Feb. 6. Tickets are $10; student and senior citizen tickets are $8.

LTOB auditions
The Little Theatre Off Broadway will hold open auditions for "Li'l Abner."
Al Capp's world famous characters sing and dance in an upbeat musical extravaganza: a satisfying mixture of hillbilly nonsense and sharp, critical humor. "Li'l Abner" is laced with gentle satire, rib-tickling humor, and a host of brash, catchy tunes.
Auditions will be held on Jan. 17 and Jan. 18 at 7 p.m. at the theater. The show calls for 40 adult men and 12 adult women, both ages 20 and up. Prepare to sing approximately one minute of music, do cold readings from the provided script, and be prepared for dance/movement. Acting resumes and photos are welcome.

Guitar Hero tournament to rock parks and recreation
Compete with other Guitar Hero enthusiasts for prizes and bragging rights at Grove City Parks and Recreation's first-ever Guitar Hero Tournament.
This one-day competition will begin at 10 a.m. on Feb. 20 at the Evans Center, 4330 Dudley Ave. Separate competitions will be held for those 14 and younger and 15 and older; space is limited to 16 participants per age group. Prizes will be awarded for the best dressed, best stage presence and best head-to-head battle as well as the first and second place finishers in each age group.

ACS scholarships
The Ohio Division of the American Cancer Society is offering $1,000 scholarships to young Ohio cancer survivors entering college for the 2010/11 academic year.
American Cancer Society Youth Survivor College Scholarship applications are now available online at www.cancer.org/ohiogrants. All applicants must be residents of Ohio, United States citizens, diagnosed with cancer before age 21, under the age of 25 at the time of application, and planning to attend an accredited university or community college in the United States. This scholarship is not intended for family members or caregivers of cancer survivors.
The application deadline is Feb. 26. More information may be obtained by calling your American Cancer Society's National Cancer Information Center at 800-227-2345, or by visiting www.cancer.org .
All scholarships will be awarded by the society's volunteer scholarship review committee and will be based on scholastic performance, community service and leadership. Due to limited funding and the competitive nature of this program, the American Cancer Society is not able to award scholarships to all young cancer survivors who apply. Priority will be given to first-time applicants. However, former recipients are encouraged to apply, but will not be guaranteed funding. Applicants will be notified in May 2010 of their funding status.
The scholarship program was established in 2000 and is made possible through proceeds from Relay For Life, the American Cancer Society's signature activity to honor cancer survivors and their families.
Pasta dinner for melanoma
The Central Ohio Melanoma Foundation will host a Pasta Dinner and Raffle in order to help sponsor a grant through the Melanoma Research Foundation's (MRF) Research Grant Program.
The event will be held on Jan. 30 at the St. John's Lutheran Church in Grove City from 5 to 7 p.m. Admission is $5 a person and includes spaghetti, meatballs, salad and drink. Desserts are available for additional purchase. The foundation will also raffle a one-week stay in a beachfront condo on Sanibel Island, Fla. Raffle tickets are $10 each or three tickets for $25. The drawing will be held at the dinner.
The Central Ohio Melanoma Foundation was founded by Jena Kitchen-Dickman in memory of Mandy Dean.
Dean was a 1994 graduate of Franklin Heights High School, a worker for the Attorney General of Ohio/BCI&I, and a single mother to her daughter, McKaley. Dean was diagnosed with stage three melanoma in September 2006, at the age of 30. Despite her best efforts to fight the disease, Dean succumbed to melanoma just nine months after her diagnosis.

Chili Cook-Off
The Central Crossing High School athletic boosters will host its third annual Athletic Chili Cook-Off on Jan. 15 from 5:30 to 8:30 p.m. The event will take place in the high school cafeteria. Those interested can purchase six tickets for $5 or one ticket for $1. Each athletic team will be "cooking off" to see who has the best chili and table presentation in all of the Comet athletic family.
Skating for homeless pets
The CHA Animal Shelter will host the second annual "Lint Roller" Skating Party on Jan. 27 from 6:30 to 9 p.m. at SkateZone 71 (located near 1-71 and Morse Road).
This family friendly event (2 legged only please) raises money for homeless pets while providing entertainment. Individual tickets cost $15 and include skate rental, pizza, soda and a goody bag. Couple's tickets cost $25, and special "four for $50" group rate is available for families and friends. Additional discounted rates are available for parties 10 and larger.

Storytime at Harrisburg Library
The Harrisburg Library will host a storytime event each Wednesday beginning Jan. 30 and continuing through Feb. 24. Storytime is for children ages 3-5 and runs from 10 to 11 a.m. Each session will include a story, music, art and a snack. Call the library at 877-4065 to enroll.
RecSchool registration
RecSchool will begin registration for the 2010-11 school year in February.
Operated by the Grove City Parks and Recreation Department and licensed by the state of Ohio, the RecSchool preschool program is designed to support the developmental needs of prekindergarten children who are three years of age and older. The program operates September through May with half-day classes offered one, two or three days per week at Gantz Barn, 2259 Home Road, in Gantz Park.
Morning classes meet 9 to 11:30 a.m.; afternoon classes meet 12:30 to 3 p.m. Participants must be 3 years old by Sept. 30, 2010.
The RecSchool philosophy recognizes that children learn best through meaningful play. Experienced teachers plan a curriculum that supports cognitive, physical and social development through art, literacy, music, math and science experiences. This nurturing environment prepares students for successful experiences in school and beyond by fostering competence, social skills, independence, creativity and a love of learning.
