Fences and America

Chelle Coleman (left) and Groveport Councilwoman Donna Drury (right) take in the Smithsonian Exhibit "Between Fences," which runs through Jan. 28 on the second floor of Groveport Town Hall, 648 Main St. The exhibit features detailed panel kiosk displays depicting the story of the settling of the United States, the creation of communities, and why people build fences, whether it be for privacy, conflict, spite, or industry. "It's a fascinating exhibit," said Drury. "It's a terrific educational opportunity for our residents and children." Added Groveport Community Affairs Director Linda Haley, "When you see the exhibit, I promise that you'll look at fences in a different way." According ato the Smithsonian, "Fences are more than functional objects. They are powerful symbols. The way we define ourselves as individuals and as a nation becomes concrete in how we build fences."  While the exhibit is self-guided, a docent-led tour may be arranged to increase appreciation. A children's area is included in the exhibit.  Touring the exhibit is free. For information call (614) 836-3333.
