New year brings new hours at Ohio Historical Center
New hours for the Ohio Historical Center in Columbus will take effect in January as work for the center's transformation into a collections learning facility gets underway.
The goal is to create an engaging place for people of all interests to explore the history and culture of those who have called Ohio home, from 12,000 B.C. to today, according to Connie Bodner of the Ohio Historical Society.
Beginning Jan. 2, exhibits will be open to visitors Saturdays from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Museum programs like the popular Uncommon Ohio tours and Echoes in Time Theatre presentations will move to Saturdays. However, schools and other groups may continue to visit the museum Tuesdays through Sundays by scheduling a group tour in advance.
"In January and February, most of the work on the collections learning center will be behind the scenes, so visitors to the museum will still have an opportunity to see our current exhibitions," said Bodner, director of education and interpretive services. "Our featured shows, Soul! and its companion exhibitions, Were You There? and Quilts with Soul!, will run through February.
The archives/library on the third floor of the Ohio Historical Center will be open only on Thursdays from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m., starting Jan. 7. However, researchers may call the reference help desk at (614) 297-2510 Monday-Friday from 9 a.m. to noon for assistance. E-mails to reference@ohiohistory.org also will be answered during that time.
The new hours are expected to remain in effect through February 2011, but will accommodate any changes in operation over the coming year. The transformation to a collections learning center will be accomplished in phases and the first is slated to open in March 2011.
Most Ohio Historical Society administrative offices at the Ohio Historical Center, including the Ohio Historic Preservation Office, remain open 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., Monday-Friday; however, staff hours vary, so we recommend calling ahead for an appointment.
Admission to the Ohio Historical Center museum: $8/adults, $7/senior (ages 60 and up), $4/youth (ages 6-12) and free for Ohio Historical Society members and children age 5 and under. Parking is $4 and free for members. To schedule school or group tours, call (800) 686-1541 or e-mail reservations@ohiohistory.org.
