CW gets funding for Gender Road

Hot on the heels of a similar multi-million dollar award, Canal Winchester is on the receiving end of another $2 million grant for street improvements.
Earlier this month, the village was notified - in partnership with Columbus - it would receive $2.1 million for a Gender Road traffic study. On Dec. 21, Public Works Director Matt Peoples said the Ohio Public Works Commission awarded Canal Winchester $2 million, out of a $2.7 application, to widen sections of Gender Road.
"We're adding dual opposing left hand turn lanes on Gender Road at Foxhill Drive for all the traffic congestion," said Peoples. "Basically, it's for traffic congestion. At peak times it's nearly impossible to get out by the schools. We're going to try to work with sensor technology. We're also looking at Winchester Boulevard and Gender Road. It's our most critical intersection and we want some back-up power there in case it goes out. We'll start the design phase in 2010, but it's a 2011 construction project."
Skatepark
Peoples provided an update on the skate park at Hanners Park and said although the construction phase is finished; site work still needs to be done before the area is open to skaters in the spring.
"At this point, it is not safe to be out there," said Peoples. "As soon as we get some decent weather, we'll do the rest of the work ourselves. Once we feel it's safe, it'll be open."

•Canal Winchester Village Council approved an ordinance lowering the speed limit on Amanda Northern Road to 45 mph.
•An ordinance amending 2009 appropriations by transferring $15,000 from parks capital to street lighting was also approved under a rules suspension. In her report, Finance Director Nanisa Osborn said the action was necessary because lighting utility costs are up and the village continues to increase the number of street lights serving Canal Winchester.
