Winter safety tips
The Groveport Police Department is offering the following winter safety tips:
First and foremost, don't go out if you do not have to. Most snow storms are short term, but the cold weather will stay for days or weeks so be prepared.
Pay attention to the weather warnings issued by Franklin and neighboring counties:
•LEVEL 1 SNOW ALERT - the roadways are hazardous with blowing and drifting snow. Roads are icy, drive carefully.
•LEVEL 2 SNOW ADVISORY - the roadways are hazardous with blowing and drifting snow. Only those who feel it is necessary to drive should be out on the roadways. Contact your employer to see if you should report to work.
•LEVEL 3 SNOW EMERGENCY - All roadways are closed to non-emergency personnel. No one should be out during these conditions unless it is absolutely necessary to travel. All employees should contact their employer to see if they should report to work. Those traveling on the roadways may subject themselves to arrest.
If you must go outside, wear several layers of clothing that will keep you warm. It is suggested you wear layers of lightweight clothing versus a single heavy coat. Since most of the body heat escapes through the head, wear a warm hat with ear muffs. Always wear gloves.
Cold weather can easily aggravate asthmatics and those with chronic bronchitis, so cover your mouth and nose when you are outside.
Watch where you walk and where you park. Slippery areas can occur on any kind of terrain so be careful, walk slowly, with sure steps to avoid falling or slipping.
Throughout the winter months even your home can be damaged from freezing temperatures. Have someone check and be sure that your water pipes are protected from freezing up. In the event the pipes do freeze, you may have to remove the insulation to get where the break or frozen pipe is but take your time or hire a professional.
Never use kerosene heaters inside an unventilated area. They build up dangerous and toxic fumes which can kill you. If you lose heat sources in your home, call a professional for help. If it is an emergency do not hesitate to call us for help.
Your car should always be filled with gas in order to avoid fuel line freeze up which can be devastating to you and your car. As we mentioned before that if you are going somewhere, please let them now when you should be arriving and even the route you may be taking.
