Alder's Mahon will play Div. I baseball in Indiana

Wearing a University of Evansville cap, Jonathan Alder’s Jacob Mahon (far right) beams at the prospect of playing Division I college baseball. On hand for the signing were Jacob's brother, Justin, and his parents, Shari and Jerry Mahon.

Jonathan Alder baseball has an Ace up its sleeve.

On Nov. 18, senior Jacob Mahon signed his letter of intent to play baseball for the University of Evansville in Indiana. The Aces are a Division I school in the Missouri Valley Conference.

“It’s a dream come true,” Mahon said following the signing ceremony. “This is what I’ve worked by butt off for over the last 12 years.”

Mahon first hit the diamond at age 6, went on to play travel baseball, then joined the high school team as a freshman. He has played rightfield, leftfield and third base. For his final high school season, he will play catcher.

“Jacob is a very talented player,” said Matt Gilkerson, who coached Mahon in his first three seasons with the Pioneers. “He’s different because he works so hard at the game of baseball.”

Though he’s very good at his sport, Mahon remains open to constructive criticism, Gilkerson said. “He’s very coachable.”

Craig Kyle, Jonathan Alder’s new baseball coach, added, “I haven’t coached him yet, but I’ve coached against him. Jacob was always the guy we would pitch around. He still has his senior year left, and I look forward to it.”

So far in his high school career, Mahon has been named all-county three times and all-district twice. He also has earned a Jonathan Alder Golden Glove award.

In addition to Evansville, Mahon considered colleges in Cincinnati, Dayton, Akron and Buffalo, N.Y. He chose Evansville for its small campus atmosphere, a reminder of home.
